Hikawa Kiyoshi is currently the most popular male Japanese enka singer in Japan. Fans coin him the "Prince of Enka" because of his young age, which is actually very unusual seeing enka fans prefer their singers to be much older. He is a semi-regular guest on many enka-oriented shows, including NHK Song Concert and the annual NHK Kouhaku Uta-Gassen. When asked what he enjoys the most out of entertaining live on-stage, he says he likes it when the fans keep yelling his name "Kiyoshi! Kiyoshi!"
I was fortunate to catch a Hikawa Kiyoshi live concert when he came to Honolulu, Hawaii in 2003. He was a guest of honor at our annual Aloha Week festivities. On Saturday, he participated in the annual parade through Waikiki, standing on his own float while waving to the Japanese tourists. And then on Sunday, I caught his concert at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. It was amazing! The one thing I got out of the concert was how in-sync the entire Japanese audience was. They had ALL the cheers down, and they knew exactly when to yell "Kiyoshi!" The glow-in-the-dark ornaments and signs also added life to the event. Let me tell you, his concerts aren't like any other enka concert I've ever seen. ---Groink 03:33, 30 Sep 2005 (EDT)
