Synopsis
Two bodies are found on the beach. One was Sayama, a government official in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, who was a suspect in an ongoing bribery case and the other was Otoki, a waitress at a Tokyo ryotei restaurant. The Hakata Police determine the two had succeeded in a double suicide but Detective Torikai who's nearing retirement isn't convinced. Detective Mihara who had been investigating earlier arrives in Fukuoka. Further legwork establishes that a colleague of Otoki while seeing off a company president at the Tokyo Railway Station noticed Sayama and Otoki on the other side of the station. The only way this colleague could have seen the two from her location at the terminal was during a 4 minute period. Torikai wonders if such a coincidence is possible, considering the odds? Various threads are untangled as the detectives continue with their legwork. --groink
