==Synopsis==
Jang Bo-go ([[Choi Soo Jong]]) was a peasant from Shilla (a Korean dynasty that lasted from 57 B.C. until 935 A.D.) He goes to Tang (a Chinese dynasty) to train his martial arts skills. There, he sees his people being kidnapped and killed by Tang pirates. He comes back to Shilla and asks the king permission to clean out the Tang pirates. Jang Bo-go seizes control of the seas and returns peace to his people again. Pirates fled at the name of Jang Bo-go, giving him the name 'Hae Shin', meaning 'Sea God'. During this time, Shilla's royal house was in tumult because kings were being kicked out after only a few years of ruling. One royal family member comes to Jang Bo-go for aid to kick out the current king. He takes the offer and kicks out the king and enthrones the royal family member. In return, he was promised that his daughter would be married to the new king's son. However, the king dies after several months and the prince tries to keep his promise to Jang Bo-go. But, due to opposition by the royal officials that the daughter of a peasant cannot be queen, the promise was broken. The Sandglass is a portrayal of two young men who are best friends and who grow up during Korea's tumultuous history of the 1970's and up to the 1980's. One turns into a bad guy gangster ([[Choi Min Soo]]) and one who is the good guy lawyer ([[Park Sang Won]]).

One unforgettable subject that's dealt in the drama is the 1980 Kwangju rebellion when the head of the military junta that took over Korea after the assasination of Park Chung Hee, General Chun Doo Hwan, sent the paratroopers into Kwangju to put down the rebellion. What happened was the subsequent massacre of hundreds of innocent people. The horrific scenes based on true accounts, of those people being murdered, touched off a deep sense of shock and grief for the Koreans at that time (the mid 90's Korea still had not come to terms with what happened after governments muzzled the free speech). After this drama went on air, there were more films that were made dealing with this very subject, movies like "The Petal" (1996), the "Peppermint Candy" (2000). It also put ex-President Chun Doo Hwan who was responsible for the massacre, in jail. You can probably say that Moreshigae was the turning point for the young budding democracy in Korea.

Kim Chae-won ([[Kim Ha Neul]]) is a bright young teacher in her mid 20s, but she still has a hard time adapting to her profession. She accidentally meets young singer and high school senior Choi Kwan-woo ([[Kim Jae Won]]), and they instantly form a bond. Of course, they're lying about each other's age: Kwan-woo says he's a college senior, and Chae-won doesn't reveal she's actually a teacher, and considerably older than him. When Kwan-woo is forced to move to Seoul because of a family problem, their lies start to produce consequences. Kwan-woo has to enroll in Chae-won's school, and she'll be one of his teachers!

The setup is familiar, and even if a little controversial, it's well played out. The series thankfully doesn't rely excessively on the typical themes of 'impossible romances.' Parents are kept at a distance until the main characters are developed enough to let us care about them, and it's not until their relationship becomes serious that the usual obstacles are put on their way. The first part of Romance is very good TV: the chemistry between [[Kim Jae Won]] and [[Kim Ha Neul]] is excellent; the supporting characters, while certainly stereotypical, are fun to watch. Also, with the exception of [[Kim Hae Sook]]'s predictable typecasting as the troubled ajumma, the parents are actually a little more colorful than expected. Chae-won's mother runs a jeans company, and is a bit of a nut, shouting 'Oh My God' at random and sporting wild haircuts. Her father is obsessed with the formalities of the father-daughter relationship, such as insistence on deferential tone. He will later play a big part in Kwan-woo and Chae-won's future as a couple, and is a well developed character.

What helps the series in its first part is the fact there's very little urgency. The writers feel no need to reveal a major plot development every week, which usually forces viewers to keep tuning in to understand. The drama is introduced slowly, and doesn't completely upstage the comedy, which makes for better viewing. Characterization, at least by TV drama standards, is quite good, although a few missteps along the line don't allow this drama to reach the depths of shows like [[Ruler of Your Own World]]. For example, the 'bad girl/guy' character isn't played out like a constant obstacle to the main characters' romance. The writers try to make a case for those characters as well, and most of the time - at least for the first half - they succeed.

Then, things suddenly change when the series moves 3 years ahead. It's clear they couldn't go anywhere with Chae-won and Kwan-woo anymore, without becoming repetitive. While the focus on secondary characters is understandable given the main couples' forced division, their complete takeover of the show ruins the pace and atmosphere. Kwan-woo's sister ([[Kim Yoo Mi]]), and Chae-won's former love affair and soon-to-be husband ([[Jung Sung Hwan]]) become centerpiece, and the parents' importance grows exponentially. The relationship between the main characters is updated slowly, every week building to the big finale. In theory, it's good writing, but when acting isn't there, the series is likely to become dull.

[[Kim Yoo Mi]] is pretty good, given her character's development and the way her problems come into play. But [[Jung Sung Hwan]] is terrible. He's not able to go beyond the same facial expression, no matter how important his reaction is to make the scene compelling. As a result, even if his character is not played out as a caricature, he doesn't allow it to come alive, and hurts the series' middle portion. Also, the constant use of fatalist, ultra-emotive mothers who faint at every sign of difficulty feels out of place for a breezy, lighthearted series like Romance. [[Kim Hae Sook]] is a good actress, and has become reliable in portraying this type of character, but she disappoints here.

Kim Yul Hwa ([[Kim Hee Sun]]) and Jung Su Bin ([[Ryu Shi Won]]) have been best friends since childhood. Yulhwa is a fairly serious-minded woman who works on tv shows as a claymation and puppet animator. Subin is a laid-back PV producer with a nack for getting in trouble with women due to his naivete. They have always been there for each other, though never romantically involved.

Things change when Yulhwa has several accidental encounters and develops strong romantic feelings for Kwon Hyuk Joon, a successful, serious man from a very good family. He has strong feelings for her as well, but is worried that his family will not accept Yulhwa because she has no father.

Subin starts to get strange, jealous feelings toward their relationship and cautions Yulhwa against continuing to see him. He believes that maybe he loves her, but are these feelings just a fear of losing his place in Yulhwa's life, or is he really in love?

Yulhwa doesn't believe that she has anything but platonic feelings for Subin, and continues to meet Hyukjoon.

As the story rolls along, this drama explores different kinds of love. Can a lifelong friendship be the basis for a lifelong love? Or is love something that comes quickly and captures the heart? Which is more important, a best friend or a new love? And will Subin and Yulhwa discover that their feelings for each other are truly that of friends? Or love....

There's something about Piano that sets it apart from other Korean melodramas. If I had to describe in short, I would probably call it a drama about tormented souls who can't find happiness, because they don't learn to let go of things and to love one another until it's too late. It was my first time seeing [[Go Su]] on screen, and besides [[Jo Jae Hyun]] (the older one), [[Go Su]] gave a impressionable portrayal of Han Jae su. He was perfect gentlemen, the sacrificial, understanding and forgiving son, brother, friend, lover, etc. (The actor who played young Jae-su was also commendable.) Unfortunately, I haven't heard or seen much of him since Piano. Jo In sung's performance was no where as good, and yet he's much more successful now.

Although I usually see the promotion leaning towards the younger generation of casts, i.e. [[Go Su]], [[Kim Ha Neul]], and [[Jo In sung]], the story is one told of two distinct time frames and settings, one with [[Jo Jae Hyun]] & Shin Hae rim (the parent generation) leading, the other with the children.

I heard [[Jo Jae Hyun]] grabbed best actor that year and rightfully deserved. First, his character, Han Uk gwan is scorned upon as a pathetic "gangster"--if you can even call him a man, then he was a man with no pride or shame, a father that attempted to desert his own son numerous times. But his encounter with [[Jo Min Su]] entirely turned his life around. This is one of the most significant and beautifully-shot scenes in the drama--when he sets eyes on her and falls in love at first sight.

However, although marriage usually symbolizes happiness and warmth, as soon as the bonding between these two lovers are made, the suffering of the step-children begins. Lee Soo ah ([[Kim Ha Neul]]) & Lee Kyong ho ([[Jo In sung]]) could not accept their second father, not mentioning one fares pale in comparison to their late respected father. Complicating the process, Jae su ([[Go Su]]) & Soo ah experiences somewhat of a love dilemma as they've build feelings for one another and now carry the titles of siblings.

A twist of fate strengthens Soo ah & Kyong ho's resentment towards their stepfather, despite him relentlessly trying to win them over.

The theme song was excellent, and went along with the opening theme very well (despite not understand a word, it was emotionally provokative, and I didn't fastforward any of it!) and the version I had also alternated the Korean version with a Mandarin redition by Fan Yi Chen, which was equally good.

The story is slow-moving with a lot of teary scenes. The dialogue is limited, but the strength of it is in the cast and touching storyline. The central theme revolves around family. The characters in Piano may appear weak as they end up suffering because of their lack of courage to stand up to do what they want, yet you feel their burdens and torment.

One of the most memorable scenes is when Soo ah takes a broken piece of glass up to her wrists to threaten Jae su to stay away from her when he tries to confess his love and force her to do the same. Soo ah is the character that appears to be strong on the outside, but fragile within. She appears cold as ice in front of other people, but is the one who breaks down the most, full of self-doubt and conflicting feelings.

This is a quality drama, which I think is rare, but may require the right mood to appreciate the overall depressing atmosphere throughout the entire drama. Sorry if relationships were cluttered, just writing as it comes to me, hope it makes sense.

==Synopsis==
[[Kim Jung Hwa]] is a young and sincere middle school teacher, who has little interest in money. She is also extremely warm-hearted and loves to help other people. When she helps carry an elderly man's belongings from the train to another location, the elderly man is extremely thankful. This grandfather turns out to be the extremely rich owner of a group of companies. His grandson, [[Kang Dong Won]] is a quick-tempered businessman who rivals his grandfather, but in an almost comical way. In an order to "tame" his favorite grandson, the grandfather agrees to give his entire fortune to the person who marries [[Kim Jung Hwa]], therefore forcing Kang to meet the girl whom his grandfather chose. Although at first Kim and Kang don't get along because of Kang's extremely cute but bad temper, their arguments bring them closer together. Kang starts to get jealous when Kim's fellow teacher starts liking her too. Through the clever conditions that Kang's grandfather makes, Kang starts a relationship he does not look forward too. However, what looked like a relationship that would 99% not work out, turns out to be the "perfect" match, the 1% chance.
