Alright, I didn't want to editorialize the synopsis, but I will here:. Rookie Agent Rouge is a great spy series overall. The plot is complex without being bewildering or arcane. Some of the acting, especially from the two lead actresses, is outstanding. The development of each from a relatively naive but talented girl to hardened elite spies is wonderful to watch.

I would have some criticisms over some scenes. In a few of them, the actions of the characters don't entirely make sense. And in a scene involving a chess board, they set up the pieces wrong (plus it uses a trick the two matters would recognize instantly).

==Synopsis==
Lan Rouge, a young dilettante and student in Shanghai in 1937, is recruited into the world of espionage after becoming accidentally involved in an incident. Her unusually acute perception and intelligence impress the Chinese secret service agency and she's assigned to spy on the parents of her best friend, Manna Feng. A division head in the Chinese military, Feng's father Zi Xiong is suspected of providing aid to the Japanese. While reluctant, she agrees to spy as long as her friend Manna is protected.

Rouge discovers that Feng Zi Xiong had a network of contacts hidden in a stamp book, narrowly escaping detection by the Fengs. Among these are several Chinese nationals, a Japanese military division head named Aoki, and a mysterious Japanesr sleeper agent codenamed Shadow.

Feng Zi Xiong, needing to send messages to Shadow, arranges for Manna to send letters as a prelude to engagement. Manna is unaware of her parent's subterfuges and accepts this.

A Chinese secret agent named Zhou Yu discovers Shadows true identity and kills him, then taking his place. Feng Xi Xiong is the only one who has actually met Shadow, and because it was a decade earlier Yu Zhou believes he can effectively step into the role.

Yu Zhou/Shadow arranges a face-to-face meeting with Manna at a dance Hall. Rouge, seeing an opportunity, manipulates the situation so that she goes to the meeting instead, intending to impersonate Manna. At the same time, she reports her findings to the Chinese secret agency.

Yu Zhou realizes that Rouge is not Manna and handcuffs her. While questioning her, they are interrupted by Manna showing up at the club, and the police showing up shortly thereafter to try to arrest Yu Zhou/Shadow. Yu Zhou knocks out Rouge and escapes.

The Chinese move to arrest the Fengs. During the arrest, however, both the parents are killed and Manna taken into custody. As her father dies, he tells Manna to seek out Aoki, who he says will protect her. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Manna is distraught over her parent's deaths and blames Lan Rouge, swearing to get revenge.
