==SYNOPSIS==
Princess Hours is a drama that starts with the interesting premise; 'What if modern Korea were a constitutional monarchy with a king?', and offers two types of fun; the romance arising between a noble prince and an ordinary girl, and the familiarity of all this happening in modern-day Korea. A perfect boy from a noble bloodline, with good looks and a sense of unpolished beauty has to marry against his will at the age of 17. An ordinary girl from an ordinary family, with a clumsy character, average grades and average looks oversteps the prejudice and barriers surrounding her. The process how they fall in love with each other unfolds with excitement. Shin Chae-kyeong and Lee Shin, because they don't know each other well, go through numerous incidents in which they end up fighting. Chae-kyeong witnesses the scene where Lee Shin proposes to another woman to avoid their arranged marriage and this is how the two become fully aware of each other's feelings. The story evolves from the fact that Chae – kyoung's grandfather was very close to the former monarch, whose wish was for her and Shin to get married. This gives some impetus to the otherwise unrealistic union of the two. As the drama progresses, many other 'fine' men, including Lee Yool, a cousin of the royal family, make their appearance. The story of the two characters, who keep quarreling about structural problems such as the rules of the royal household in the midst of the difficulties of being a prince and of the arranged marriage, will unfold in an interesting way. The show's fun lies in the episodes concerning the status gap that exists between a prince and an ordinary citizen. As more problems of status arise, the uniqueness of being a prince will be more greatly exposed, and doubling the fun of . When the king's illness gets worse, Crown Prince Shin receives an order to get married his arranged marriage partner. Shin realizes that there have never been personal choices available in the life of a Crown Prince, though he's only nineteen. Prince Shin proposes to his girlfriend Min Hyo-rin. Taking it as a joke, Hyo-rin shows her cute smile and takes off to practice for an international ballet competition. Shin doesn't hold onto her but just smiles faintly as she turns away and leaves…. Chae-kyeong has a dad who stays at home as a full time house-husband after his business failed and a mom who works as an insurance consultant. Chae-kyeong's family, which was able to create happiness in the midst of difficult times, suddenly becomes in-laws with the royal household. To Chae-kyeong's parents everything seems much more like a dream, as they see that the arranged marriage grandfather always boasted of become realized. Chae-kyeong cries out loud, not willing to accept the fact that she has to get married at the age of nineteen, but Shin accepts the marriage, not caring about who becomes the queen. To him, she's not a person he'll ever love anyways and she'll just live in the palace like a doll. Meanwhile, Hyo-rin engages herself only in her ballet practice abroad without knowing about her boyfriend's marriage. Yool, second – in – line to the crown and the son of Crown Prince Hyo – yeol, who abandoned his position 15 years ago and left with his wife for England, comes back to his motherland. Upon hearing this news, the king instinctively senses the danger of Crown Prince Shin losing the crown and orders Shin to be careful of Yool. Shin just laughs at the fight over the crown and ignores the king's words. Chae-kyeong enters the Oon-hyeon palace, the palace of the new queen - bride, to get educated as the future queen. Shin, who visits the detached palace, is stunned by the beautiful presence of Chae-kyeong in her ceremonial dress…

EPISODE 1
In the 14th year of Inhwa dynasty when the Hyun emperor's illness gets worse than ever, the empress commands the Crown Prince, still in high school, to marry the bride who has been arranged for him beforehand. However Prince Shin, proposes to his secret lover, Hyo-rin Min, an ambitious ballet student who takes his proposal as a joke and turns him down saying that her success as a ballerina is of her primary concern. Meanwhile, the family of Chae-kyeong, an ordinary high school student, is in deep financial trouble for standing security for the wrong person, and is overwhelmed with joy when they receive the marriage proposal from the Royal Family. The last words of their dying grandfather wasn't a bluff after all! Prince Shin agrees to marry the all-too-ordinary prearranged bride provided the Chang-Duk Palace be granted independence and the IkWiSa be reduced. However, Chae-kyeong, who had happened to witness Prince Shin's proposal to Hyo-rin, is outraged by the arranged marriage, and claims it is nullified. Right at that moment, the creditors march in to Chae-kyeong's house and put red cards on all of the furniture.
EPISODE 2
Chae-kyeong, therefore, has no choice but to marry the prince due to her family's financial crisis. But things aren't easy, right from the first encounter with the Royal Family. Moreover, seeing that the prince has no affection for her whatsoever, showing careless cynical behavior throughout the wedding process, Chae-kyeong comes to regret accepting the proposal. But it's too late; the Royal Marriage is the top news in the press, and Chae-kyeong's house is crowded with reporters. Yool, the son of Prince Hyo-yul who died in an unfortunate car crash 14 years ago, hurries back to Korea under the urgent order of his mother – princess Hye-jung, eager to the win back her husband's throne. In the airport, he runs into Hyo-rin, who has just returned from her contest but they don't recognize each other. Yool has been studying fine art in England, and transfers to a high school for arts, where Shin and Chae-kyeong are also students. Unlike Shin, who tries to be friends with Yool, his mother, the Empress, feels a shade of anxiety upon Yool's reappearance…

EPISODE 3
At last, Chae-kyeong has made up her mind to join the Royal Family. Lessons for becoming a proper Crown Princess start as she enters the palace. She has to endure hard training, which includes learning proper ways to talk, memorizing the whole wedding process, etc., with the Prince showing no interest nor offering any help to her. Life in the palace is not an easy task from day one. A huge ceremony is held to welcome the new Crown Princess, and with the entire country as witness, Shin and Chae- kyeong are wed in the traditional 21st century Royal procedure. Meanwhile, Hyo-rin, who had previously rejected Shin's proposal, stands at a ballet stage in Thailand…

EPISODE 4
On the first day after the wedding, Shin and the rest of the adults in the Royal Family go out to fight a little war to ensure they receive what was promised to them for granting the marriage. While Shin is being very serious, Chae-kyeong, on the other hand is busy enjoying the privileges of being the Crown Princess and is slowly adapting to life as a Royal. Chae-kyeong and Shin go to school but Chae-kyeong gets treated like an outcast; the only person that actually talks to her is Yool. Shin runs into Hyo-rin, who has came back from her contest…

EPISODE 5
Chae-kyeong, after making her morning calls to the elders of the royal family, is surprised to see Yool inside the palace. Yool, a transfer student in her class, turns out to be prince Ui-seong. At first Chae-kyeong has a hard time adjusting to life in the palace with its strict education and rules, but thanks to the warmth of the emperor and other elders at the palace she starts to find the royal culture attractive. Meanwhile, Hwa-yeong prepares to open a yoga center while plotting with Choi against the other royal family members, while Yool gets closer to Chae-kyeong and her friends. Prince Shin's birthday is coming soon, and Chae-kyeong starts to get excited about the birthday party, but the only people awaiting her are Shin's friends, who despise her, and Hyo-rin…

EPISODE 6
Thanks to Yool's help, Chae-kyeong looks good in the eyes of the Queen Mother. In addition, after attending a number of events with Shin, she becomes well known to the public and loved by them for her plain looks and free spirit. Yool tells her she should carry herself with dignity but she ignores his advice. At the opening of the yoga center Hwa-yeong meets Hyo-rin and finds out that she is the Crown Prince's ex-girlfriend, and when the Empress later finds out the Hwa-yeong has secretly come to Korea and opened a yoga center, she is greatly displeased. Meanwhile, at the palace a party is held to announce the officially married Crowned Prince and his wife to the ambassadors of the constitutional monarchy.

EPISODE 7
Kam-ae-tta-la starts to feel uneasy as Chae-kyeong adjusts to the palace life. As Hyo-rin thinks back on the good days with Shin she remembers what Hwa-young told her and is determined to get Shin back. Meanwhile, Chae-kyeong misses her family because she hasn't seen them since she moved into the palace. But soon she and the prince are finally allowed to go visit her family. Chae-kyeong is very happy to be back home but Shin has a hard time adjusting, due to the fact that he has lived his whole life in the palace. Chae-kyeong's family also feels uncomfortable living in the same house with the him. Chae-kyeong and Shin, who quarrel frequently, end up spending a night together in Chae-kyeong's small room.

EPISODE 8
Chae-kyeong and Shin return to the palace and after spending time with Chae-kyeong's happy and close-knit family. Shin feels sad to see his family who has always been under the control of his strict father, the King. Seeing this, Chae-kyeong comforts him and Shin prepares a car just for her. Persuaded by Hyo-rin, Chae-kyeong and Yool join an equestrian club. Not knowing why Hyo-rin invited Chae-kyeong into the club, Shin's friends are dissatisfied with the whole idea. Meanwhile, Shin goes to Thailand in place of the Emperor, who couldn't go because of health reasons.

EPISODE 9
While Shin is away in Thailand Chae-kyeong gets lonely and gets in trouble for breaking the car. After overhearing some girls at school talk bad about her she gets hurt and asks Yool to just take her away from the palace some place far away from it all. In, Kyeong, Hwan, and Hyo-rin all go to Thailand. Hyo-rin meets up with Shin and asks him to take her to the airport and the two end up spending a day together. Meanwhile, back at the palace Chae-kyeong has disappeared…

EPISODE 10
After taking Hyo-rin to the airport Shin makes it to the press conference just in time and gives an outstanding speech. Meanwhile, back at the palace Chae-kyeong gets confined to the palace for leaving the palace walls without permission. Yool after seeing Chae-kyeong get in trouble asks Hwa-young to make him the crowned prince. With the help of Yool, Chae-kyeong successfully finishes the welcoming ceremony for Prince William and Hwa-young starts finding back her and her son's rights as a royal family by asking the emperor to replace back to them Emperor Hyo-yeol's powers. Chae-kyeong, who has been waiting for Shin to get back from Thailand, finally sees him…

EPISODE 11
Chae-kyeong insists on riding her horse alone even though the court ladies try everything in their power to dissuade her. While riding her horse she accidentally runs into a stranger in the palace who turns out to be princess Hye-myeong, Shin's older sister. Shin is happy to see his sister, whom he hasn't seen for a long time and uncharacteristically shows his softer side to her, telling her his deepest thoughts. The paparazzi photos of Hyo-rin and Shin get reported in the Thai newspapers. The Empress sees the newspaper and gets angry at Shin. Chae-kyeong also finds out about it and gets angry at herself for missing Shin while he was away in Thailand, not knowing that he was with Hyo-rin. Chae-kyeong and Hyo-rin run into each other at school and Chae-kyeong asks her about what really happened in Thailand between the two, but instead of showing a sorry attitude Hyo-rin shows a very dignified attitude causing Chae-kyeong to faint in front of her friends.

EPISODE 12
Shin tells Chae-kyeong that he is going to withdraw from being Crowned Prince, and she starts to feel frustrated because she does not know his true feelings. Chae-kyeong tries her best to get closer to him but the more she tries the more frustrated and angry she gets through finding traces of Hyo-rin. Eventually she gets into a fight with Shin and breaks into tears. In the palace the plans for the restoration of Prince Yool's power are in their final stages and Hwa-young and Yool get ready to move back into the palace. The entrance of a new power figure starts to create a division between people of the court over whom they are going to be loyal to, and the Empress and Hwa-young are busy keeping each other in check. The Empress Dowager, who has the final power in deciding whether or not the powers get restored to Hwa-young and Yool, doesn't know whether giving them the power is the right thing to do or not. Yool and Shin bump into each other in the palace and start a nerve war. Meanwhile, the Empress Dowager takes Chae-kyeong to Cheju Island to attend a formal royal event.

EPISODE 13
The Empress Dowager, Shin and Chae-kyeong go on a little road trip around Cheju. Shin and Chae-kyeong try everything they can to cheer up the Empress Dowager. The kids at school start looking at Yool through different eyes when they see his new style. Meanwhile, the Empress is busy keeping her eyes on Hwa-young, who has moved into the palace. Hwa-young, scolds the Crown Princess for being lazy and for forgetting about her role and responsibilities as the Crown Princess. After the pictures of Hyo-rin and Shin have been revealed to the public, bad rumors of Shin and Chae-kyeong start to go around. Worried, the adults of the family gather to discuss a plan to stop them before they get any bigger. They decide to have the couple get into the bridal bed. Having no idea of the plan, Shin drinks some medicine that he was told is good for his body and Chae-kyeong gets all dressed up. Chae-kyeong sits in a room with her court ladies wondering what in the world is going on when she hears Shin coming into the room.

EPISODE 14
After hearing about the couple getting into bed together Yool runs over to see Chae-kyeong. She tells him that nothing happened between her and Shin, and he hugs her, relieved from the unthinkable thought of the two spending the night together. Shin sees this and gets very angry at Yool. Chae-kyeong's friends get angry at Hyo-rin for starting the rumors and start to criticize her. Chae-kyeong learns a secret about Hyo-rin and starts to feel uncomfortable. Someone leaves a picture inside the Crown Princess's room. Chae-kyeong is shocked when she sees it and disappears. Shin and Yool soon hear that she has disappeared and instantly go out looking for her.

EPISODE 15
After finding Chae-kyeong in the Myung-sun Dang, Shin takes her to a place where they can be alone, where they proceed to spill their hearts out and tell their true feelings towards each other.
The violence between Yool and Shin becomes known throughout the palace. Hwa-young tells the Empress that she is not going to stand by and watch stuff like this happen ever again, raising the conflict between her and the Empress. The Emperor calls Shin (his son) and harshly scolds him, causing Shin to rebel against him.
Despite all the malicious gossip about the Crown Prince and Princess they attend a public conference. When the reporters ask for a loving pose Shin displays his showmanship.
Meanwhile, the Empress Dowager senses the tense atmosphere of the palace and suggests that the whole royal family should have a meal together.

EPISODE 16
Shin and Chae-kyeong leave on a short honeymoon together.
Hyo-rin leaves on a trip to where she can find traces of Shin and her love. After getting the cold shoulder from Shin, Hyo-rin remembers what Hwa-young once told her and once again makes a firm determination not to give up.
Because of Hyo-rin, Shin and Chae-kyeong feel awkward again and Chae-kyeong starts to feel confused when Yool tells her to leave Shin so he can be with Hyo-rin.
The Empress finds out about Hwa-young's plans and starts to take action… Just then the Crown Prince's scandal gets known to the public and the palace goes into distress about the matter.
The Emperor calls Shin and begins seriously considering whether or not Shin is fit for being Crown Prince.

EPISODE 17
Chae-kyeong gets angry at Shin for leaving the palace for a while without telling her where he was going. She asks him why he always keeps everything to himself and worries alone. Hearing this he suddenly hugs her and asks her to stay by his side even after he resigns from being Crown Prince.
Meanwhile, Hyo-rin, who has come to the palace at the Empress's request, receives an offer from the Empress to support her.
Yool asks the Emperor permission for the Crown Prince and Princess to accompany him on his vacation for his birthday party.

EPISODE 18
The criticisms of whether the Crown Prince is good enough or not keep rising; even the Emperor starts wondering if Yool is more fit for the spot.
Meanwhile, Hyo-rin discusses with Shin her education plans. Yool tells Chae-kyeong, who is feeling miserable at hearing that Hyo-rin and Shin had once promised to go abroad and study together, how he feels about her.
Shin's jealousy begins to boil when her sees the two together…

EPISODE 19
Chae-kyeong gets confused about all the trouble she got into with Shin at Yool's birthday party. Watching her, Shin feels sorry and apologizes to her but she doesn't take his apology and instead their anger toward each other deepens.
Chae-kyeong hears a rumor about her parents saying that they are profiting with the help of the palace. Hearing this she starts to feel the palace life more and more stuffy and choking. Shin senses her feelings and lets her get away from everything by having her go home for a night.
The Empress finds out about it and scolds her for doing whatever she wants to do even though she is the princess. Chae-kyeong gets her feeling hurt and runs out of the palace.

EPISODE 20
Because of an unexpected incident Chae-kyeong ends up in the middle of a rumor. She meets her greatest crisis after becoming Crown Princess and wanting to figure out a way to stop the rumors on her own she refuses help from Shin and Yool.
Shin becomes angry at seeing Chae-kyeong worrying about how to fix her mistakes and orders the Myung Seong Dang to be repaired, but this just causes the Emperor, Hwa-young and Yool to get angrier and more frustrated.
After seeing Shin isolate himself from the others of the palace, the Empress calls him to talk as mother and son. She tells him about what she wishes for him.
After seeing Hyo-rin working towards of becoming her dream to become a ballerina, he thinks again of his dreams and what he really wants. He finds that his future includes Chae-kyeong and the Empress's wish and goes to the interview with a firm attitude.

EPISODE 21
Shin barely manages to cover up for Chae-kyeong's surprise announcement.
The adults of the royal family get very angry at Chae-kyeong's actions, which were not in line with the ordinary palace rules. Seeing this, Shin feels sad and angry at the same time.
Because of the incident, the scandal of the crown princess blows up again and Hwa-young gets nervous so she decides to use Chae-kyeong as the scapegoat to protect her son. Chae-kyeong kneels in front of the Emperor to ask for his forgiveness and cries, and Shin just ignores her.
Because of the incident Shin's ability to be Emperor gets questioned and as this deepens Yool gains trust from the Emperor. In the middle of all this, however, Yool can't stand looking at Chae-kyeong having such a hard time and reveals his feelings in front of all the royal adults.

EPISODE 22
Yool tries his best to keep faithful to his heart even if it means breaking the rules. Shin insists that rules and regulations are the strength that holds the palace together. Even though their ways of following them and carrying them out are different, the person they want to protect are the same.
Chae-kyeong also feels bad watching the people she loves and cares for getting hurt, while the reasons and reality also grow farther and farther apart.
Meanwhile, the Emperor worries about the behavior of Yool and the other royal family members. Shin goes to Hwa-young and warns her that if she does any more harm to Chae-kyeong that she is going to pay the price…but even with this warning her ambitions continue to grow…

EPISODE 23

Shin gets driven into a corner as an arson suspect. He insists that he is innocent but all the evidence leads back to him. Only Chae-kyeong believes him to be innocent and feels bad looking at his drooping shoulders. Shin, knowing that someone actually cares and loves him, doesn't feel lonely anymore and calmly handles the situation.
Yool senses that it was all part of his mother's plan and tells her to stop whatever she's planning on doing but she does not know how to stop or even control her ambitions. As more incidents happen the existence of the palace starts to get questioned by the people and in order to stop all the rumors the Emperor suggests that the crown princess should practice more self-discipline. Chae-kyeong also thinks that as crown princess she should do it for the palace and the people, so she agrees but…
Chae-kyeong wants to show Shin the world that she once lived in so the two go out together into the everyday world, not as the royal couple but as a normal couple and enjoy a day out away from the palace.

EPISODE 24

As the investigation of the arson incident furthers and the facts about it get revealed Shin gets more and more accused of being the cause of it. In the midst of all this Chae-kyeong and Shin's feelings towards each other grow even stronger and they fight together to get through this storm. The two already resemble each other regardless of Chae-kyeong having told him that she has studied hard to be fit for him.
The Emperor once said that "Apart from the truth of the incident, the person worthy of the imperial throne is the one who receives the love and honor of the people." Hwa-young smiles a smile of satisfaction and throws in her last card.
The Empress sees that Chae-kyeong has slowly started to show the qualities of a crown princess and for the first time they actually sit down and talk with each other. The Empress encourages her and gives her strength. With the warming concerns of her mother-in-law and a token of love from her husband, Chae-kyeong feels a responsibility to protect her new family and once again rises with a firm determination to protect them.

==TRIVIA==
The beginning of 2006 gave TV Stations quite the wake up call, especially the former 'Drama Kingdom', MBC: ratings were dominated by shows targeted at an older audience (Weekend, Daily Dramas), and Miniseries were slowly but surely losing ground and importance in the ratings war. The outcome of one of all time most popular Drama format probably could be seen right from the beginning, when 질투 (Jealousy) brought in the era of Trendy Dramas in 1992, focusing significantly less on storytelling and more concerned with 삼각관계 (love triangles) featuring pretty and famous stars. With 20 something viewers turning TV off entirely or exploring other entertainment venues (films, VOD, Cable or Satellite), the new paradigm of success for Miniseries has become target demographics, sort of like what happens in Hollywood. So the coming of 궁 (Princess Hours) is an interesting, if somewhat worrying trend.

Focusing its attention on the teenager market, using Park So-Hee's popular manhwa of the same name as its foundation, Princess Hours started as a 20 Episode 사전제작 (100% pre-broadcast shoot) production, but both because of various problems MBC experienced at the beginning of the year, which forced Eight Peaks to rush to an early January broadcast instead of the planned March one (which made the 100% pre-broadcast goal impossible), and the rising popularity of the show leading to 4 additional episodes building to a possible (now confirmed) Season 2, derailed the whole project.

The interesting thing is that Hwang In-Roi, a longtime assistant producer on TV who then moved to films and is now back to TV, wasn't supposed to be the PD here initially, only the Executive Producer. He always had a negative image of how TV Dramas developed over the years, after getting out ot the business when production methods started to change in the mid 90s. Hwang, who worked on classics on TV like 수사반장 (The Chief) and directed Chungmuro failures like 꽃을 든 남자 (A Man With Flowers), brought a new concept to the table, with his new production company Eight Peaks: first moving the focus from the stars (which is what gets you overseas contracts) back to the production, investing more money on sets and art direction than expensive big names with dubious acting talent; and then target intelligently a certain type of audience which will respond to the Drama, in this case the teen demographic, as the original manhwa was a big hit with that age group.

Actually at first they even thought about using famous actors, but Hwang was enraged at what he called a lack of co-operation from said stars (there was a rumour BoA was cast in this at the beginning, but it's just that. A rumour): essentially those stars weren't working for the good of the character, but pushing their own image or what their management wanted them to push. That of course brought a lot of advertisement into the Drama, but once Hwang announced he'd go with an all-new main cast, they almost all ran away scared. This is perhaps the major problem when it comes to pre-broadcast shoots: since you need to secure investment before the ratings are out (box office : Movies = ratings : Dramas), that often leads you to compromise the integrity of the project to give investors the terms they want to pump money into the Drama -- which might not be at Sageuk level, but touching the 5 Billion Won for a normal Miniseries is still quite expensive.

This wasn't the first time Hwang tried this approach, as he helped legendary Sanullim front man Kim Chang-Hwan make a debut in the acting world with the interesting (but flawed) 1994 omnibus drama 연애의 기초 (Love Formula), which he was planner for. And if you've ever seen Kim act, you know he looks born to be in this business (of course he and his brother were much more famous for their work in the music business). But now the problem was dealing with the youngsters he picked: Yoon Eun-Hye, former BabyV.O.X. member, who lost a lot of weight to look the part; Kim Jung-Hoon, former U.N. member -- who did debut in films last year, but if you've seen his first two films then you know why people were complaining; Joo Ji-Hoon, a former model with no acting experience, and finally Song Ji-Hyo, who debuted in 여우계단 (Wishing Stairs) and confirmed the good first impression with her role in 썸 (Some).

Song was the only one with a future in this business at the beginning, and after watching the show things haven't changed a bit, but since her role wasn't the focus of Princess Hours, then we were essentially dealing with three newcomers. And that's when people started complaining. In theory, Hwang's modus operandi was actually right: since big stars would carry an image with them, that'd work against their making the characters (high school students) feel fresh. Of course the rest of the cast was made of people who had the ability to save the day, like veterans Kim Hye-Ja, Shim Hye-Jin, Im Ye-Jin, Gang Nam-Gil and Park Chan-Hwan, but you know the deal, this is a Miniseries, and they'd only get to try and do some damage control.

But even if casting might have been a problem, the rest of production was top notch: In Eun-Ah, who was in the writing team for the lovely romcom 좋은 사람 있으면 소개시켜줘 (A Perfect Match) and even Jang Yoon-Hyun's 텔 미 썸딩 (Tell Me Something); Art Director Min Eon-Ok, who won awards for her excellent work in 혈의 누 (Blood Rain); Visual Supervisor Min Byung-Cheon, director of 유령 (Phantom: The Submarine) and 내츄럴 시티 (Natural City); music by indie group 두번째 달 (2nd Moon); food experts who worked on 대장금 (Dae Jang Geum) to give more colour to what was served in the Palace, and more. And that reaped fruits right from the beginning: this is one of the best looking Dramas of recent memory. It's not on par with 신돈 (Shin Don) and 주몽 (Jumong), but those are ultra-expensive Historical Dramas where production values are an essential part. Music is quite a few notches above your average Miniseries, and PD Hwang's assured direction makes this look more like a film than a Trendy Drama.

But above all that, the main item was the most creative thing: strip Historical Dramas (rarely watched by teenagers) of their more heavy-handed, complicated nuances (conflicts and political intrigue still remains, but it's like 5% of your usual Sageuk) and maintain their major possible appeal to this target demographic: their sumptuous sets, production values and that air of 'familiar unfamiliarity' which the Joseon setting always gives to Koreans. And, here's the key, bring all that to a modern setting. Yes, Princess Hours deals with a Korea still in the Joseon Dynasty, essentially, but also enjoying all the benefits of modern technology and pop culture (the cover of the manhwa which inspired this Drama has the Princess dressed with a traditional Hanbok and a mobile phone on hand). The first few episodes playfully work around this idea, that even though it's still everyday Korea with Lee Hyo-Ri, silly school fights and all the trips and traps of Korean teenagers, we're not dealing with a Republic.

This approach is important, not only because it brings young teenagers closer to their roots in a way that doesn't alienate them -- unlike, say, what Im Kwon-Taek did with 춘향 (Chunhyang). And, if things actually ended up as Hwang had promised before the show, Princess Hours could have bridged the gap between age demographics, as it brought Trendy Dramas closer to older viewers' world than the Andromeda satellite it appeared for all these years. As an avid Sageuk fan, I have to admit the first few episodes of this show were quite fascinating, and some of the best performances in a while from the veterans made it all the more interesting. Then, of course, problems started. MBC, hungry for anything resembling a ratings increase, stuck with the show a little too long, adding 4 unnecessary episodes which only ended up stretching a script that had already serious pacing problems.

And now they're even giving us a Season 2, as clearly they will never get tired of ratings between the 25 and 30%. This gap to fill, these extra 4 episodes made the show hard to stand, not only because the story was simply going nowhere (and, quite frankly, moving from the initial interesting premise to the usual Trendy Drama cliches, this time with a Palace setting), but also because the putrid acting of the main trio (especially an almost embarrassingly bland Kim Jung-Hoon) made things even worse. Nothing happening here has any impact, you can hardly care about the characters, and sometimes you'd wish some more focus was spent on the 'ancillary' characters: the best scenes of the show involve Chae-Kyung's interaction with her family, and the political intrigue surrounding the Royal Family's problematic past, with Kim Hye-Ja and Park Chan-Hwan in particularly splendid form.

What do you do when you're given more of a dish even though you're full? And, even worse, what will the makers of the second Season give us, with writer In Eun-Ah out of the picture, and a script which needs to be written from scratch (Season 2 won't have an original source this time)? Frankly, I just hope these are early (mis)steps in the slow but inevitable move to 'Seasonal' Dramas, because if this is more of what we'll get, then we'll be left with a Panorama full of shows written like Friends. That is, shoving uninteresting characters in uninteresting situations down people's throat for years, hoping they won't notice there's something better to watch. As a concept, Princess Hours was brilliant. What we got at the end, a little less. Time to reflect on those mistakes, and come back with something better next Season. Because those Princess 'Hours' felt like decades to me...

We sat down with her during a commercial shoot for a green tea beverage. Yoon's schedule has been CRAZY hectic, but she was happy to meet with us!

With her soaring popularity as a budding actress, Yoon Eun-hye is swamped with daily casting calls for commercials. She takes this one in-stride - a vivacious young lady, full of bouncy cheer, a bit simliar to her character in ¡°Princess Hours¡±!

From hit comic book series, to the small screen - the adaptation of ¡°Princess Hours¡±! It's a fictitious tale of Korea as a constitutional monarchy, with a royal family. Yoon is an ordinary high-school girl who ends up marrying the royal prince. For first-time actress Yoon Eun-hye, the response has been pleasantly shocking.

But the truth is that Yoon Eun-hye wasn't welcome in the acting arena at first. People were surprised to hear that such a rookie would be taking the lead in an upcoming drama; A rookie who used to be a singer and had no formal acting training. But she showed them how it could be done! Yoon Eun-hye played her character PERFECTLY and made sparks fly with co-star, Joo Ji-hoon. So, how is it that she dug-out such a hidden talent?

In 1999, a five-member girl group blasted into K-pop. They were Baby VOX and that was Yoon Eun-hye's debut into stardom.
They cranked out hit after hit, and basked in the limelight. Not many people realize how popular Baby VOX actually was - They were one of the first to promote overseas, forerunners of the Korean Wave.

Content There are a lot of modern TV dramas, however this is the first one whose setting is modern-day Korea as a constitutional monarchy. Strangely enough, tradition and modernity are in harmony in this story. A lot of attention is given to Prince Shin in the Story.

The 2314(0.57acre) set in Osan cost 1.5 billion won to build. What does it look like?
Prince Shin's room is filled with a high-tech home theater and an old movie projector, which represent his fascination with movies.

An interview with Prince Shin, Joo Ji Hoon

- Have you been to a fortune teller this year?
I don't like to go to fortune tellers, however I do think that everything will go well this year.
The drama "Princess Hours" starts well, and I will try my best with my first role. Recently I have been more stressed, but I believe a person's destiny is based on their effort.

- What has been the reaction to your role so far?
The comments are 50 - 50. I thank those who are supporting me with their kind thoughts. But I also thank the other half for being honest about my performance.

- What are the difficulties in playing the role?
Many scenes are not that easy for me, especially the ones where I need to express extreme changes in emotions. It is difficult for me as a young actor to express opposite emotion in a short period of time. Also I feel a lack of skill when I have to hit or while being hit. When I am hitting or being hit by others, I am not satisfied with my performance. I have heard that there are special schools that can help me with this part of my acting. I think I will continue to try to make this part of my acting more life-like.

- You were a model. Are there any strengths or weakness in going from being a model to an actor?
Still shots and video are definitely different. With 3 years of modeling experience I feel confident in a still photo. I think I am too used to radiating a feeling in still shots so I feel like robot in front of the movie camera. I realize that acting in a natural way is much more difficult than just being myself without a camera.

Of course others before have made similar changes. Audiences prefer to be satisfied in a visual way, thus actors and actresses that were previously models are increasingly popular. It is a mixture of fashion and broadcasting. I would like to encourage models who have the talent and desire to take a shot at acting.

- Did you have any difficulties because of your height?
Handyman was my nickname in high school. Because of my height, I was very recognizable to every teacher and student. I was 6'1'' tall at 22 years old and now I am 6'2'' tall. I stretch every morning, afternoon and night. It is easy and indeed it works. If you have a problem with your height, try that.

- Do you like Prince Shin dolls?
I like to pick up the dolls in vending machines. My odds of success are pretty high as I spent so much money on those machines when I was in school. With 1000 won there are 3 chances and I can normally pick up 7 to 8 dolls. I like to play Prince Shin as he and I have several similarities.

- What do you think about the idea of a marriage of convenience?
I don't like a marriage for any purpose other than true love. Also I don¡¯t like too many differences between couples. I haven't had a girlfriend for 3 years and I hope my new girlfriend will be similar to me.

- Do you work well together with Yun Eun-hye?
Both of us are in the learning stage right now therefore we are getting better with each scene. As time goes by, Yun Eun-hye is really becoming 'Chea-kyung' while I become Prince Shin. She used to have the image of a singer from 'Babybox' however now she has her own image. I didn't know it before but she has a great complexion

- How does your personality compare to Prince Shin's?
Everyone has different sides to their personality. I am very outgoing when I am with others however I don't like to go out once I get home. Also I like to listen to music and read books. Personally I believe that everyone needs to have their own space so they can enjoy time on their own. I am pretty much similar with Prince Shin's character at the beginning of the drama. He is extroverted when outside but not when at home. However he slowly opens his heart to 'Chae-kyung' at the end of the drama. It is great to see how Prince Shin becomes a real 18 year-old boy.

- How did your parents react when you decided to become an actor?
I have a very big family; 8 people including my grandparents, therefore they are very conservative. However when I decided to change my career from modeling to acting nobody said anything about it. Indeed, my parents liked it when I got into university with an acting major. Even though they never say anything, I know they love that I¡¯m on a TV drama, as one day my mother brought a stack of papers to me to put my signature on.

- Do you have a role model among other actors?
Every actor has his own style. I like to watch movies to study the actors when I have spare time, but instead of picking several actors to follow, I want to learn from all the actors I can. Before I started acting, Jung Woo-sung was my favorite, as we are from the same generation. I want to be an actor that someday somebody else wants to follow.

This interview took place on the set, with Ji-hoon sporting a nice smile throughout. He seemed so quiet at first, however he is a very smooth talker. His deep love of acting was very noticeable throughout the interview. Let¡¯s look forward to seeing more of him on the screen.

==Review==
In the first episode the main character, Nah-ra's (Han Chae-young), comic yet mellow acting really sparkled and the drama is getting reviews saying that the drama overall has a speedy development with comical elements here and there, which makes the drama fun to watch. Especially the scene when she puts on a slip and falls in the bathroom while trying to seduce her boyfriend or the scene where she puts on a breast battle with the other cheerleaders; one which made everyone burst into tears. --- MBC Global Media

SUMMARY:

Shin Na Ra (Han Chae Young), close to getting 30, with no job and no money, is dumped by her boyfriend of 7 years, Seung Woo. He went on a business trip in San Francisco and hooked up with Chae Mi Rae. Mi Rae works for a cosmetics company called the face shop as a manager.

Shin Na Ra, through some events, and without necessarily intending to at the beginning, pretends to be Seung Woo's cousin, Na Gyung, 20, and works at THE FACE SHOP as sales attendant.

While having a drinking spree, she meets Na In Jae, who accidentally drinks the ring Seung Woo gave her. The ring is to be digested and come out after one week.

At one instant, he sees the id of Na Ra' sister Na Gyung, as simply assumes that she is Na Gyung, 20. He agrees to give the ring back if she poses as a cheerleader for the the team that he coaches.

Na In Jae is the son of the owner of THE FACE SHOP. he eventually works with Na Ra. He is in love with Cha Mi Rae, but Cha Mi Rae was his brother's fiancee. His brother, In Jang died of a car accident. In Jae blames himself because he revealed that he in fact had feelings for Mi Rae, before In Jang took off with the car and died.

Many scenes such as the cheerdancing, the kiss at the bar (In Jae pretending to be Na Ra's boyfriend to get rid of a high school boy who fell for Na Ra and thinks that she is actually only 20), Na Ra's birthday, the shower scene, etc, were all endearing.

It is later revealed that Cha Mi Rae actually loved In Jae, and agreed to becoming In Jang's fiancee because she thought that In Jae does not and would not like her. (Being with In Jang, she will also be near In Jae). ***She then says to In JAe that it is not his fault that his brother died, because she also revealed before the accident to In Jang that she does not love him, but In Jae.

In Jae sticks with Mi Rae, prior to knowing *** because of guilt.

Overall, it is funny and the development is speedy, I would agree. Best romantic comedies are still (1) princess hours a.k.a palace a.k.a goong and (2) full house. Not bad are (1) lovers in paris (2)exhibition of fireworks and (3)wonderful life.
