= Synopsis =
The well-known story of "Duke of Mount Deer" tells a tale of an uneducated scoundrel named Wai Siu Bo who grows up in a brothel with his mother. He has never known who his father is. Wai Siu Bo's only goal in life is to be rich and it's understandable because of where he comes from. However, with a twist of fate, Siu Bo encounters many distinguished figures such as Chan Gun Nam, Eunuch Hoi, the one-armed Ming Princess, emperor Hong Hei, etc., these encounters have not only changed his life but also brought out those admiring characteristics of Siu Bo. From the very bottom of the social ladder, Siu Bo makes his way up to the top as a beloved servant of the Emperor and as a distinct figure in the Heaven and Earth Sect. Initially, Siu Bo might be greedy, might do anything to save his life, however, towards the end of the series, we come to love the character because he is very human. He might be greedy but it is realistic, he might be flirty but he does care for his wives, he might be uneducated but he is extremely loyal to his friends, and never once forgot his responsibilities towards his family. "Duke of Mount Deer" makes fun at all the values and tradition that were praised very highly in other Jin Yong novels. The Heaven and Sect's members are not as brave and courageous as the Red Rose Sect in "Legend of the Book and the Sword". Our hero in this story is not dashingly handsome nor is he powerful in kung-fu.

= Review =
One of the main reasons that "Duke of Mount Deer" is so much admired is because of the character of Wei Xiaobao. Wong Jing changed many things about the character of Xiaobao including some of the most fundamental morals of the character, yet he still managed to very lovable character despite the changes. The main reason is because Dicky Cheung did such wonderful job of portraying a different Wei Xiaobao than the one that we are used to. Dicky's Xiaobao actually has guts, he is rarely scared throughout the entire story. Also, the story itself tries to justify Xiaobao's amazing luck with women, it tries to make it seem that he deserves these women; a futile task if you ask me, but the story nevertheless attempts this. The story actually has the girls follow Xiaobao around for a long time, during which he goes to hell and back for each one of them at least once, before he finally marries them "in name and in action." This, of course, gives Xiaobao some honor that he never ever, ever came close to having in the original story.

==Synopsis==
Mang Lai Kwan (Michelle Yip)'s father Mang Si Yuen (Lo Hoi Pang) was a royal doctor for the previous dynasty and a learned man, but he is set in his ways and believes that women should not be educated. Kwan wants to seek knowledge and often dresses as a man to go to school. On her ventures, she meets the royal grandson Tit Muk Yi (Joe Ma) who is travelling in disguise and also a straight-up young hero Wong Po Siu Wah (Raymond Lam) and the three become adopted brothers. Yi sees through Kwan's disguise and knows she is a girl, but he does not reveal this; Kwan also has feelings for Yi. Yuen decides to marry Kwan to Wong Po Siu Wah, but at the same time, rich bully Lau Fui Bik (Cheung Chung Chi) asks for Kwan's hand in marriage. As the day of the marriage draws near, Kwan decides to tell Yi about her feelings towards him, but Yi is summoned back to the courts and asks Wah to take his place to meet Kwan. When Kwan is stood up, she is very disappointed and sends Wah away. Kwan runs away and on her travels, dressed as a man, causes many laughs and much trouble, getting involved in many different situations. Kwan's feelings develop for both Yi and Wah and are forever changing between the two, especially when she finds out that Wah is her fiance and Yi has become the emperor.

When I first knew that Michelle Yip and Raymond Lam were going to be the leading actress and actor in this series, I was like, �What?!?! What the heck was TVB thinking??? Putting the not-so-famous actress and actor as the leading characters??? Especially this Michelle Yip, whose performance was already very bad in Reaching Out, and yet TVB still dared to put her as the lead actress?? Weren't they afraid of a big flop??� As for Raymond Lam, when I first saw him in A Step Into The Past, his performance was only ok, so I thought Raymond was not appropriate to take the lead actor because I was not familiar with his acting as well.
 
So, after much doubt and hesitation, I decided to try giving it a go, and boy, was I in for a real surprise!!! Since when and how did Michelle Yip become so good in acting? Her performance in this series was EXCELLENT!!!!!!!! It was like this actress had changed overnight. Like from zero to hero, 0% to 100%. It had me wondering, is this the same Michelle Yip I saw in Reaching Out? Till today, I am still wondering what really had made her become so good in acting??? As for Raymond, his performance in this series was better than in A Step In The Past, but all credit had to go to Michelle. The actress, whom at one time I thought was real bad in acting, had proved me wrong � in fact, the series itself had proved me wrong.

==Setting==
Jin Yong had a penchant for integrating most of his stories seamlessly into China's history, from the Song Dynasty all the way to the Ching, and as far as I know the Crimson Sabre is the only story which deals with the fall of a dynasty within its story. The three-way power struggle between the Ming Dynasty, Li Zicheng and the Manchus was well-utilised, with characters from all three sides playing a major role in the story. From Yuan Chonghuan to Dorgon, the historical characters and fictitious characters complement each other, and make the story immensely believable. Major events like the death of Huang Taiji to minor issues like the rivalry between Li Yan and Niu Jinxing in the Dashun camp were portrayed and dramatised very well. Of course, this is more credit to Jin Yong than to TVB, but it definitely makes the show worth watching for historical value as well.
 

==Review==
I rate this series a 3.5. It's good entertainment, and you learn a fair bit about the fall of the Ming (it's *almost* accurate - Chongzhen is recorded as having died with a eunuch, not a general), but it's probably not good enough to merit watching more than once. I prefer it to the Wong Yat Wah version in the 1980s - I found the structure of that series not quite as easy to follow. Basically, Crimson Sabre is an enjoyable heroic story in which the good guy beats up the bad guy, most of his friends survive, and they all live happily ever after. The bad guys don't really stand a chance, and that's where the story fails a bit. The plot basically has to move along with the fall of the Ming, and as such doesn't really move much on its own. Sing Chi could have killed Chongzhen the moment he left Huashan, but history dictates that Sing Chi does not get that chance, and hence he has to go on little adventures to pass time while Li Zicheng builds up strength. The bits with Ha Suet Yee and Wan Yee/Wan Sin are the best moments in the show, but they are sadly too short.

On this day of February 14, 1980, Michelle Yip Suen was born into the loving arms of her father and mother. She was the only child so her parents treasure her like their little princess, but nothing last forever. When she turned 9 years old, her parents seperated. This wasn't a surprise because there were fore warnings that this day will come. Her dad was living in the US. She remembered one night her mom suddenly left the house leaving her on her own for a week. She was afraid to turn on the lights at first because she was scared about electricity. Then when she turned on the lights, she was afraid to see blood on the floor because someone once said that when lights are turned on, ghosts turn into puddles of blood. It was truly a real test of courage for a little girl staying at home alone in a big house. When her parents file the divorce papers, The Chinese Law Court gave her custody to her dad, so therefore she had to move to the US with her grandparents to live with her dad. She didn't want to leave her mom, but she didn't have a choice so all she could bring with her were their memories together. The only way that she could communicate with her mom was through letters. It was difficult for her to adjust to life in the US when she first moved there, and she would cried a lot. When she was 13 years old, her dad remarried, so she decided to move out with the financial support from her dad. When asked whether her parents would go out with her when she is unhappy, Michelle says, "My parents split up a long time ago and they don't live together so we are all rarely together. = Review =
This new TVB series is very undetailed. The series was basically about the romance between a guy and his girlfriend whom he can't have and his romance with another girl in another world, when in fact the story should have been based more on the comparison of 'old world' and 'new world'. It should have focused more on the history of the country and not on the romance of Louis Koo.

The story starts out with the audience getting a glimpse of Louis's bravery and great skills and tactics in controlling an awkward situation. Then it rushes us right into the love triangle of Louis, Sonija and the other guy that Sonija is about to wed. Then out of stupidity Louis agrees to travel back in time to take a picture of the Great King and in return he will get to use this time machine to go back in time and propose to his girlfriend before it was too late. The time machine takes him back too far to a time before the king was crowned so he ventures onto an unexpected journey. It was a little funny at first when he goes to the old couple's house and uses their restroom. Then all of a sudden it looked like he was actually from the past. Sure, he was trying to blend in, but he should at least show some signs that he didn't belong in that part of time. He was also told not to build relationships or do anything major because it would alter the future. But he kills a lot of people in this series. And also becomes a big part of other people's life. He changes people's outlook on the world (I would say that he changed a lot of things). Then the biggest part was when he made up a 'false' king after finding out that the real king was dead. Also, let me remind you that he was from the future but he fell for two girls and eventually married them both at the same time. He didn't even feel guilty doing so. He was obviously taking advantage of the situation because after all, he was from the 21st century and there you don't marry two girls at once. His character, initially afraid of commitment, became otherwise.

Time travel has always been a popular topic among fiction, and recently it has been successful in creating hits. The storyline has heavy influences from the American movie Frequency, perhaps some Butterfly Effect, and reminds me of the countless movies using this idea such as the Korean hits, Ditto and Il Mare. Here it freshens it up an overused concept by combining crime/detective stories with time travel. Despite the lack of style seen in other works of this genre, To Get Unstuck in Time has an amazing script carried out by a chemistry-packed cast. Even if you can't make sense of some parts of the story, this series is a must see.

Ho Tin Gwong or Morning Sir (Roger Kwok) is a capable policeman, but takes everything too seriously and is hot-tempered. Although already in his 30s, he has never dated and spends whatever free time he has with his mother, who raised him up in a single parent household. Morning Sir's father, also a policeman, died in infamy 20 years ago, of drug overdose and in the bed of a prostitute. This has left this to be a sensitive spot in both their lives. When his father was still living, they were a close-knit family and this shameful death came as a shock to both mother and son. Neither could comprehend exactly what kind of person was this man they loved--faithful husband and loving father--or scumbag.

Through a freak of nature, Morning Sir discovers that he can transcend time with his father's old cell phone (first generation, water bottle-style) from the present year 2004 to talk to his father in the year 1984! Despite his father's wrongs, Morning Sir is overjoyed at being able to communicate with someone so close he'd lost and the two hit it off. His father becomes Morning Sir's "secret informant? and helps him with cases. His father is also able to "send" him things, such as clues and evidence by burying them under a designated spot, which Morning Sir is able to unearth in the present. At first Morning Sir distances from his father, only identifying himself as "future person," but as they get to make up for lost time through talking and solving cases, Morning Sir gets to know him and discovers the mystery behind his father's death.

Go San (Flora Chan) is an eyewitness in the opening case and clashes with Morning Sir because of different personalities, creating a bad start. A car accident when Go San was 7 years old left the bottom half of her body paralyzed, but she has lived a carefree and happy life. It was this accident which strengthened her parents' rocky relationship during a crisis that would have separated her parents. Go San is a crime/detective novelist. She strongly believes in her intuition and often uses this to make assumptions, which Morning Sir thinks is irrational. Although physically handicapped, her brilliance is equal to that of Morning Sir. Through coincidental involvement in more cases, Go San and Morning Sir prove to be a compatible pair in working together to solve cases and become good friends.

He is changed by her optimism, kindness, and perseverance in life; and she also has fond feelings for him. But shortly after they become a couple--Go San suffers under a sense of inadequacy. She is unable to go on normal dates with him, with many places being inaccessible to the handicapped. She faces mocking from others for being a cripple trying to dating a normal person. Although Go San tries to overcome all of this, she feels that she has never felt so helpless until she started going out with him, and it's nobody's fault, but painfully decides she would feel more comfortable being just friends.

Morning Sir decides he would change destiny by telling his father to stop the vehicle which hit Go San in 1984, thus prevent the accident from happening and make everything perfect in the future. As they spend their last date together as a couple watching the rainbow, Go San falls asleep on his shoulder, and he smiles thinking that when she wakes up, their problem would be solved--she would be able to walk, and they would be able to be together. But when he wakes up again, Go San is gone.

What has he done?! Morning Sir never imagined that changing one incident would cause a chain reaction to happen, i.e. different outcome for everything it impacted. The world as he knew it before changes altogether. Because Go San never got hit while running away from home, her parents divorce, Go San was kidnapped and never found. It turns out that she was brought up by triads, and now works within them. Go San is no longer seems to be the same person, going by Nicole. As Morning Sir and Nicole stand on opposing sides, they know that only one side can win.

For a series that's in the crime/detective genre, Time, is surprising versatile. The cases are gripping and thoughtful. The strong father & son relationship is beautiful and touching. The interaction between the cast members is endearing and funny. Time leaves you unable not to have connected with the entire team and their different facts. The series play with the idea of the cause-and-effect, family, love, friendship and issues such as forgiveness, letting go & moving on in such a powerful way that it's therapeutic. To indicate time warp, a cheap-looking insertion scene came on every time that got tiresome after a while, but other than that, this was an excellent series.

Ever since winning My Favorite Male Lead in TVB's Anniversary Awards for Square Pegs, it seems as if Roger Kwok has been shadowed by his character in it, a retard. In Time, he surfaces and shows off his acting ability in an emotionally-charged character. Although Roger didn't win me with Square Pegs, he sure did in Time along with Flora Chan. Ironically, Flora has won me over with her last TVB series. Even if they were technically the same person, Go San basically played 2 different personalities, Go San and Nicole. She was so excellent you could read her without her saying anything. But what surprised me was she finally took on a semi-villainous role and performed it well. I also have nothing but praise for the supporting cast minus Cherie Kong who played Lee Sze Ching. However she is new and I see potential.

The way the series end suggest the idea of leaving things to fate. You can't put a finger on it, but probably the most satisfactory kind of ending I've seen in a very long time. The ideas are somewhat philosophical and I personally found pacifying, perhaps rooted in Buddhism, which makes me wonder whether there is a neo-Buddhist movement going on with it surfacing in other recent Hong Kong works.

On this day of February 14, 1980, Michelle Yip Suen was born into the loving arms of her father and mother. She was the only child so her parents treasure her like their little princess, but nothing last forever. When she turned 9 years old, her parents seperated. She remembered one night her mom suddenly left the house leaving her on her own for a week. She was afraid to turn on the lights at first because she was scared about electricity. Then when she turned on the lights, she was afraid to see blood on the floor because someone once said that when lights are turned on, ghosts turn into puddles of blood. It was truly a real test of courage for a little girl staying at home alone in a big house. When her parents file the divorce papers, The Chinese Law Court gave her custody to her dad, so therefore she had to move to the US with her grandparents to live with her dad. She didn't want to leave her mom, but she didn't have a choice so all she could bring with her were their memories together. The only way that she could communicate with her mom was through letters. It was difficult for her to adjust to life in the US when she first moved there, and she would cried a lot. = Synopsis =

= Review =
This new TVB series is very undetailed. The series was basically about the romance between a guy and his girlfriend whom he can't have and his romance with another girl in another world, when in fact the story should have been based more on the comparison of 'old world' and 'new world'. It should have focused more on the history of the country and not on the romance of Louis Koo.

The story starts out with the audience getting a glimpse of Louis's bravery and great skills and tactics in controlling an awkward situation. Then it rushes us right into the love triangle of Louis, Sonija and the other guy that Sonija is about to wed. Then out of stupidity Louis agrees to travel back in time to take a picture of the Great King and in return he will get to use this time machine to go back in time and propose to his girlfriend before it was too late. The time machine takes him back too far to a time before the king was crowned so he ventures onto an unexpected journey. It was a little funny at first when he goes to the old couple's house and uses their restroom. Then all of a sudden it looked like he was actually from the past. Sure, he was trying to blend in, but he should at least show some signs that he didn't belong in that part of time. He was also told not to build relationships or do anything major because it would alter the future. But he kills a lot of people in this series. And also becomes a big part of other people's life. He changes people's outlook on the world (I would say that he changed a lot of things). Then the biggest part was when he made up a 'false' king after finding out that the real king was dead. Also, let me remind you that he was from the future but he fell for two girls and eventually married them both at the same time. He didn't even feel guilty doing so. He was obviously taking advantage of the situation because after all, he was from the 21st century and there you don't marry two girls at once. His character, initially afraid of commitment, became otherwise.

I've seen 5 different Monkey King adaptation but I'll just stick to the TVB ones. In terms of story and plot this adaption is the weakess that TVB has produced, the first Journey to the West also by Dicky Cheung is by far the best one and Journey to the West II is not too bad as well. I too felt Journey to the West III is a bit rush and basically rehashing the story from number 1 & 2 together.

However, the characters in this adaption is certainly amusing and probably the most fun out of the 3 series and of course all the star power especially the addition of the Twins certainly attracted the younger viewers. I think the first 2 focused more on the morale of the Journey and talks a lot about budism and this one had a lot less...I mean this one had Monkey King in a romance!! While this is fun it certainly deviated a lot from the intention of the Journey to the West story and I think that made it weaker.

Having said all that I watched it for the Twins.
