A drama about a man and woman who come to know true love after unexpected circumstances cause them to live under the same roof. Singer and songwriter Tamaki Koji returns to acting after a 8 year hiatus, to star opposite Kanno Miho in this drama. Koji plays a very kind policeman; a champion of the weak and a pacifist. Having lost his wife 4 years earlier, he has been saddled with the arduous task of raising 3 children singlehandedly. Kanno stars as the unfortunate heroine with an ugly personality who grows through her encounters with this good natured middle aged man.
Televiews/ 3 cheers for 6th-grade boot camp<br>
Wm. Penn / Special to The Daily Yomiuri

Move over, Kimpachi-sensei! Maya Akutsu-sensei of Joo no Kyoshitsu (Saturdays, 9 p.m., NTV network) is vying for a place next to you in the small-screen teachers' Hall of Fame, and she is obviously a woman who gets what she wants.

The series was the first prime-time drama out of the gate this quarter and it has yours truly eating crow already. My "stale doughnuts" analogy of last week does not apply to Joo no Kyoshitsu. It is about as crisp as a Japanese drama can get.

Amami Yuki plays Maya Akutsu, a sixth-grade teacher who dresses all in black and is repeatedly referred to as "oni sensei" (the teacher from hell), when, in fact, she seems to be an ultrarealist at heart. The drama focuses on a year in her classroom and, particularly, the effect it has on 12-year-old Kazumi--a nice but mediocre student whose parents want to send her to a private secondary school.

And what a surprising change of pace this classroom is! There is no slouching, talking back or disregard for the rules here. The teacher is actually in charge, and she takes no whining from the kids, who are shivering in their chairs, fearful of her wrath.

Akutsu-sensei accomplished this feat by introducing a test-based rank and privilege system on the first day. The highest scorers on the Monday morning test get their choice of seats and other perks while the two lowest scorers are burdened with all the chores for the week from blackboard and toilet cleaning to serving lunch. The system also disallows toilet breaks during class because this reflects an inability to manage one's own schedule.

Kazumi gets the first week's work assignment along with the class clown, a warmhearted boy who is not nearly as silly as he acts. The child actors in the series are all likeable pros who give realistic portrayals of the wide spectrum of an average classroom from the isolated serious students to the sophisticated girls who think they already know what life is all about. Akutsu-sensei lets them know immediately that they do not have a clue.

When the students protest her system and call it unfair, she tells them to open their eyes. In Japanese society, she lectures, those who work hard or have influence get all the privileges, and the lazy or less affluent end up with the leftovers. She says only six in 100 people can expect to be happy and the elite already have most of the advantages and access to the best medical care. She tells them that, as products of the public school system, they will have to scramble to get anything at all, and most of them will end up as "bonjin" (ordinary people), to whom those on the top will be happy to leave the soldiering and service-sector jobs.

When the kids counter that grades aren't everything and the sports and entertainment worlds still beckon, the teacher argues an even smaller percentage will make it in those fields. She may just be telling it as it is, but it is a pretty bleak message for the first day of sixth grade.

In another scene, the servers overturn the curry pot and are about to go to the cafeteria for more when she stops them. Serve what's left to me and those at the top of the class pecking order, she says. The others will have to go without. In the real world, she notes, Japan ranks 124th in food production, and without the United States or China would die of hunger--yet we still throw 20 percent of our food away. We can't really afford to waste food.

A week on the work team has Kazumi putting in a heroic study effort for the second week's test but she is so busy studying, she forgets to go to the bathroom. She is in obvious distress but the teacher will not excuse her.

This leads the smartest girl, the teacher's favorite who has been receiving extra guidance, to stand up for Kazumi in front of the class and point out life can't always go by the rules. Akutsu-sensei tells her she can escort Kazumi out but she will be sacrificing her own test score for her.

Out in the hall in tears, Kazumi can't make it to the toilet in time. The classmate, until then not one of her friends, cleans it up for her and vows silence. When they return, the teacher punishes the girl who was brave enough to speak out by assigning her to the next week's work detail.

Not exactly the most relaxing way to spend a Saturday night, but this is definitely a drama where viewers are going to be asked to think--a great rarity on Japanese TV. I suspect we are supposed to think the hardship, the harsh reality and the cold severity of authority figures can also end up creating solidarity, social consciousness, communication and compassion among the students and maybe even, like icing on the cake, lead to an improvement in their grades.

But perhaps it is not quite that simple either. Akutsu-sensei obviously has a few other tricks up her sleeve, and if we stay tuned we may all learn something interesting. If nothing else, we should find out the secret of why Akutsu-sensei has been away on a sabbatical for the last two years.

Like Nakama Yukie of Gokusen and Sorimachi Takashi of GTO, this TV teaching gig may be the role for which Amami becomes best-known. The script is by Kazuhiko Yukawa, who also gave us the TV adaptation of GTO and the ultrarealistic, posttraumatic stress disorder drama Mahiru no Tsuki in 1996, and it looks like he won't disappoint this time either.

Joo no Kyoshitsu earned a perfect score in the first week's test--but can it
maintain that high standard over the next 10 weeks?

Synopsis
This story is about four men who work in a confectionary. Tachibana Keiichiro (Shiina Kippei) is the owner; Ono Yusuke (Fujiki Naohito) is the superb baker that has a mysterious and mesmerizing aura; Kage (Abe Hiroshi) is the waiter and close bodyguard of Tachibana; and last but not least is Kanda Eiji (Takizawa Hideaki), the ex-boxer who loves cake so much that he becomes a waiter at 'Antique'. This is a refreshing, yet heartfelt comedy about the 4 very unique personalities that work until the wee hours of the night at the small confectionary. The series follows the romance, family life, and most importantly friendship that these 4 men from different generations experience.

This is a confectionary with a "flavor" not like most. Located in the middle of an ordinary residential area, "Antique" stays open until 2 a.m. Every single thing in the shop is antique, in fact even the sherry glasses that water comes in look like they would cost 50,000 yen. On top of this, all the sweets that are sold are unbelievably delicious. The thing that is most peculiar about "Antique" though is that all 4 of the men that work here are very handsome, and each has an interesting past. Those that frequent the store also have a story to tell.

Edited Excerpt from JDorama.com

Review
An episodic series revolving around "Antique": the 4 people who work there and the customers that often frequent the confectionary. Although the series lacks much continuity since each episode can stand alone by itself, the comedy makes up for it - from the "love" glances between Shiina Kippei and Fujiki Naohito, the cake gorging of Takizawa Hideaki, and the wittiness of the narrator's notes, this series should definitely not be missed. Memorable acting on all the main actors' parts.
Synopsis
A romantic comedy about women in their 30's

For everyone who still remembers "Suteki na Kataomoi," "Tokyo Love Story," "101st Proposal," prepare yourselves for even more of those same touching moments again.

Breaking the tradition of the main character for a Monday night drama being a woman in her 20's, Esumi Makiko stars as Kyoko Asaoka, a 32-year-old heart surgeon working at a hospital in Tokyo. Men tend to shy away from the tall, well-educated and well-paid Kyoko because they see her as a woman that can do things on her own. The truth of the matter is that Kyoko is just unlucky in love. She is also old-fashioned, and wants to fall in love just like anyone else, but has a hard time showing her real self to men.

Review
A Love Merry-Go-Round

This is the romance drama for all romance drama enthusiasts. Esumi Makiko plays the intelligent and classy doctor Asoaka Kyoko, who because of studies and work has not had much time for love. In fact, she has not once had a boyfriend and she has already turned thirty. Her good friend, Mariko (Yonekura Ryoko) encourages Kyoko not to give up and has her go to St. Valentine. There, they meet an odd woman who points at Kyoko saying ominously, "Next year you will be married to a man who will tell you everything."

However, as time passes Kyoko becomes more and more involved in her work and finally gives up on love. However, when she does so, not one but two men come into her life - Suga Eiichiro (Fujiki Naohito) and Yabuki Mamoru (Oshio Manabu).

Esumi Makiko does a stunning portrayal as Asaoka Kyoko, someone who is serious in both love and work. She had great chemistry with all the male leads, especially Fujiki Naohito. The story flowed seamlessly and the episodes tended to always end with a cliffhanger, making you want to continue on.

You will definitely be humming "Kiss of Love" by Hirai Ken after watching just a few episodes.

The Popular Sports Manga Finally Becomes a TV Drama on TBS

So, here's another drama based on a sports manga. If you saw Ueto Aya in "ACE o nerae" last winter, then you might have some idea of what to expect. H2 was a popular manga from the very popular artist, Adachi Mitsuru - most famous for "TOUCH" which was published from 1981 to '87. In 1992, he made "H2". There was also a 39-episode TV anime series in 1995. The drama stars Yamada Takayuki and Ishihara Satomi who are, perhaps, the two hottest teen drama stars currently in the business. Since it's based on an already-popular series and features already-popular actors, there is no doubt that this drama will be a hit.

Once again, I am going to have to begin with my usual apology and say that I never really read the manga or saw the anime. I can remember picking up a volume or two of the manga back when my Japanese level was still very low and never quite figured out much other than the fact that it's about baseball - as virtually all of Adachi's work is. I have, on the other hand, seen the anime versions of two of his other series - "TOUCH" and "Miyuki" - so it would be incorrect to say that I'm completely unfamiliar with his work. Adachi Mitsuru is required reading for all manga fans who like sports and romance. And if you don't like sports - only romance and comedy - there's always "Miyuki".

Now, for those who, like me, never read the manga, here's a basic rundown of the story.

Kunimi Hiro (Yamada) was a gifted baseball player in elementary and junior high school, known especially for his pitching. Unfortunately, before entering high school he and his teammate, Atsushi (Nakao) suffered injuries which permanently damaged Hiro's elbow and Atsushi's back, rendering them unable to play baseball ever again. Baseball is everything to these two, so they are, understandably, crushed by this unfortunate turn of events.

They both enter a high school which doesn't even have a baseball team. Atsushi works on the school paper, and Hiro is on the soccer team. He tries very hard to enjoy soccer. He's shown buying some soccer manga in one scene in order to make himself like it, but he doesn't display any of the same natural talent that he did for baseball, and in fact he's terrible at the game. He tries his best not to think about baseball, but he certainly isn't a happy child.

Koga Haruka (Ishihara) is the manager of the school's "baseball enjoyment club", which is the closest thing the school has to a baseball team. All of the members are horrible at baseball, their equipment is garbage, and their manager is clumsy. They can't find a team who will play against them for the final game of the graduating students, so Haruka desperately makes an agreement for them to have a baseball match against the soccer team.

Hiro quietly takes his place as catcher. No one at the school knows that he used to be a star baseball player. Since the soccer team also has Kine Ryuutarou (Ishigaki), who was also quite a good pitcher in elementary school, the soccer team makes fools of the "baseball enjoyment club".

However, partway through the game, Hiro can no longer stand to sit and play catcher. He says that the game is "an insult to the god of baseball," and quits the soccer team mid-game. He joins the "baseball enjoyment club" for the rest of the game as pitcher. Atsushi also puts away his camera and joins as well. Despite their injuries, they put on a good show and almost win the game - which they would have won if it weren't for a slip-up by another teammate at the end.

When word of their performance gets around, Hiro and Atsushi suddenly find themselves the most popular guys in school. Haruka begs them to join the "baseball enjoyment club", but they tell her about their injuries and why they can't play. Soon after, however, it is found that the doctor who originally diagnosed their injuries was a fraud. They get themselves checked by another doctor and find that Hiro's elbow and Atsushi's back are perfectly strong and healthy after all. (Talk about lawsuits!)

Their first impulse is to look into transferring to a different school where their friend and former teammate Tachibana Hideo (Tanaka) is now the star player. Instead, they suddenly get a weird idea and decide to join the "baseball enjoyment club" at their current school. Now they will attempt to turn the club into a full-fledged school-endorsed team and lead them to victory at the holy grail of high school baseball: the national championship at the "koushien" arena.

Actually, at the very beginning, it showed Hiro facing off against Hideo at the koushien, so it's pretty safe to say that they will get there by the last episode.

Like "ACE o nerae", this drama based on a sports manga is highly dramatized - even more so than your average TV drama. Of course, baseball is the most important thing in this world, and the players who have the natural ability are practically without flaw. What I enjoyed in "ACE o nerae" was watching Hiromi's change from being a beginner who can hardly play to becoming world champion. In this drama, Hiro is not a beginner, but rather a junior high star who makes a sudden return in high school. I doubt I'll enjoy it quite as much as I did "ACE o nerae", but I think it's going to be pretty entertaining as well.

I'm definitely going to watch every episode of this drama.

Synopsis
Sakuragi Kenji is a destitute lawyer and one-time member of a motorcyle gang trying to guide failing high school students with an average score of 36 into Japan's most prestigious educational institution, Toudai University.

"If you want to change your life, get into Toudai!"

For no other reason than Sakuragi's personal ambition, he has advertised his intention to produce 100 successful Toudai applicants from the students of a nearly bankrupt failure of a school.

"If you want to change your life, get into Toudai!"
He will get them from this lowest of all schools into Japan's number one!!

Our protagonist, Sakuragi Kenji, played by Abe Hiroshi in his first role as a high school teacher, is a must see in this summer's new show. This third rate lawyer soon becomes the homeroom teacher for the special advanced class aiming for Toudai University entrance. Hasegawa Kyouko costars as english teacher and Sakuragi's opponent, and Yamashita Tomohisa from NEWS and Nagasawa Masami also appear in the role of students. This awaited original work and fascinating world view is brought to you from the popular serialized comic in Shuukan Morning (Kodansha) and has even been updated!

In addition to revealing essential test taking techniques for everyone who wants to know how to get into Toudai, Dragon Zakura will also teach the essentials of living one's life.
