Machiko goes on writing her memories during and after the Second World War. In 1944, as a student of a girls high school, Machiko visited a small church at a kindergarten with her friend. While interested in the teachings of the Bible, Machiko was suspicious of why it was so different from what she had been taught about being a subject of the Emperor. One day, there was a fire at an elementary school, in which a portrait photo of the Imperial couple and the Emperor’s words written on paper were burned. The schoolmaster, the father of the friend of Machiko, committed a suicide and the family left Osaka. In 1945, Machiko started volunteer labor at a factory for the military. The news that her cousin Shinji was killed in a battle made the family sink into grief. Meanwhile, Machiko’s mother gave birth to a baby boy, who was named Nobuo.
