When Taizu passed away and the throne was ascended by Chai Rong, Fu Jinsheng was appointed as the Empress. Because Jinsheng had already married once, she was merely treated as an Empress only in name.

When Chai Rong was recruiting troops in Bian Liang, Guo Shao used this opportunity to enter army. He managed to achieve recognition in the Battle of Jinyang by killing one of the esteemed warriors of the Liao troops. Jinsheng supported and assisted Guo Shao, and the two begin to develop feelings for each other.

Guo Shao managed to befriend Qing Xiao, a disciple of Reverend Ma Yi, young princess Chai Yiyi and other heroes of the puglistic world. With everyone's guidance, he managed to attain success in the upcoming battles in Pingyou Valley, Ding Houshu and vanquishing Northern Tang. Slowly, he gains the admiration of Chai Rong, as well as the preposition of Zhao Kuangyin.

When Jinsheng fell ill, she decided to use this as an opportunity to fake her death, and thereafter she escaped to be with Guo Shao. When Chai Rong eventually passed away, the people saw this as an opportunity for Zhao Kuangyin to stage a military revolt.
