;Episode 31 - この世の悲しみ (The Sadness of This World) - 20.7
Kazutoyo is sent to Okazaki to persuade Ieyasu, who has been ignoring Hideyoshi’s call to make an appearance in Kyoto to show his obedience to Hideyoshi. Kazutoyo’s effort to talk the experienced warlord into visiting Kyoto ends in failure. Around that time, a massive earthquake hits Nagahama and causes the collapse of the Nagahama Castle, where Chiyo and Yone live. Crawling out of the debris, Chiyo looks for her daughter. Kazutoyo rushes home and finds that Yone has died in the disaster.

;Episode 32 - 家康の花嫁 (Ieyasu's Bride) - 19.7
To make Ieyasu submit to the Toyotomi family, Hideyoshi maneuvers a plan to marry his own sister Asahi to Ieyasu as a hostage. Chiyo is asked by Nene to help her persuade Asahi to divorce her current husband, but Chiyo decides to shelter Asahi in Nagahama, hearing Hideyoshi’s intentions.

;Episode 33 - 母の遺言 (Mother's Will) - 18.7
Hideyoshi starts an invasion of Kyusyu, but Kazutoyo is left behind in Osaka. Irritated at losing the opportunity to fight and achieve a feat, Kazutoyo keeps arguing with his brother over trivial matters. Worried about their quarrels, Chiyo visits their mother and finds her ill in bed. Chiyo takes care of her but her mother-in-law dies shortly afterward. Hearing their mother’s last words from Chiyo, Kazutoyo and his brother make up with each other.

;Episode 34 - 聚楽第行幸 (The Emperor's Visit) - 17.3
One day, Chiyo finds a baby boy abandoned at the gate of her residence. Getting Kazutoyo’s consent, Chiyo decides to bring up the baby herself and names him Hiroi. Meanwhile, Kazutoyo is appointed as one of the facilitators for the Emperor’s visit to Hideyoshi’s luxurious residence in Kyoto. At the same time, Chiyo is asked by Nene to sew a kimono for the event.

;Episode 35 - 北条攻め (The Hojo Invasion) - 19.7
In the city of Kyoto, Chiyo runs into Jinbe, Asahi’s former husband, who is disguised as a vendor. She speaks to him but he refuses to identify himself. Around that time, Asahi is on her deathbed at Hideyoshi’s residence in Kyoto. Chiyo takes Jinbe to see Asahi, hiding his identity because the former husband would not be allowed to meet her. Jinbe tells Asahi his true feelings towards her. Meanwhile, Hideyoshi moves his troops to Odawara in order to beat the Hojo family and complete the unification of the country. Kazutoyo goes to the front under the command of Hidetsugu, Hideyoshi’s nephew.

;Episode 36 - 豊臣の子 (A Toyotomi Child) - 20.8
Hideyoshi’s young son whom Yodo (Chacha) gave birth to suddenly dies. Yodo suspects that Nene has poisoned her son. Chiyo is called and asked by Nene to support Hidetsugu as the successor to Hideyoshi. Grieving over his son and looking for something to devote as an escape from the sorrow, Hideyoshi decides to invade Korea. Hideyoshi passes the rank of Kanpaku to Hidetsugu and names him the top commander while he is away for the Korean invasion. Chiyo visits Hidetsugu and feels uneasy about his eagerness to rule over the whole country.

;Episode 37 - 太閤対関白 (Hideyoshi vs. Hidetsugu) - 20.6
Yodo gives birth to another baby boy of Hideyoshi, which puts Hidetsugu’s position as the successor to Hideyoshi at stake. Though he understands such a circumstance, Hidetsugu tells Chiyo that he is determined to fulfill his duty as the Kanpaku. Meanwhile, Hideyoshi begins to treat Hidetsugu as a nuisance without disguise. As a chief retainer of Hidetsugu, Kazutoyo is torn between the Kanpaku and Hideyoshi. One day, some of Hidetsugu’s retainers are captured by order of Hideyoshi for plotting treason against Hideyoshi.

;Episode 38 - 関白切腹 (Hidetsugu Commits Hara-kiri) - 19.6
Kazutoyo visits Hidetsugu and tries to persuade him to defend himself in front of Hideyoshi. Hidetsugu’s followers try to stop their master from going to see Hideyoshi. As tensions grow between the retainers of Kazutoyo and those of Hidetsugu, Chiyo breaks in. She urges Hidetsugu to quit being a samurai and become a Buddhist monk so that his life will be spared. However, Hidetsugu makes up his mind to see his powerful uncle.

;Episode 39 - 秀吉死す (The Death of Hideyoshi) - '''24.4'''
Hideyoshi holds a coming-of-age ceremony for his son Hideyori, though the son is only four years old. Kazutoyo attends the ceremony and feels that his mater has aged and become high-handed. Meanwhile, Chiyo is called and threatened by Yodo that Kazutoyo’s life will be jeopardized if Chiyo remains on Nene’s side. Worried about the future of the Yamauchi family, Chiyo plans to have a housemaid bear Kazutoyo’s heir.

;Episode 40 - 三成暗殺 (The Assassination of Mitsunari) - 19.0
Hideyoshi has died. According to the master’s will, Mitsunari Ishida calls back Hideyoshi’s retainers who have been fighting in the Korean Peninsula. Hearing for the first time their master’s death, those followers including Kiyomasa Kato and Masanori Fukushima turn their anger over the useless battles on Mitsunari. Now the warlords who have served under Hideyoshi start to split into two groups: one led by Mitsunari and the other by Ieyasu. After Mitsunari accuses Ieyasu of disobeying Hideyoshi’s instructions, Kiyomasa and Masanori who have decided to side with Ieyasu take up arms against Mitsunari. Kazutoyo takes action to save Mitsunari, believing in Mitsunari’s loyalty towards their late master’s family.

;Episode 41 - 大乱の予感 (A Time of Turmoil) - 22.4
Mitsunari retreats to his domain and prepares for battles ahead. Around that time, Ieyasu enters the Osaka Castle with thousands of troops to drive Mitsunari to wage a war against him; if a war occurs, Ieyasu can beat not only Mitsunari but also other lords who sides Mitsunari, and then seize power. Seeing Ieyasu’s move, Nene tells Chiyo that the only choice left for Yodo and Hideyori to survive is to go under the aegis of Ieyasu. Chiyo asks Nene if she is suggesting that the Yamauchi family should do the same as well. Kazutoyo wavers over whether to side with Mitsunari or Ieyasu, as he wants to remain loyal to Hideyoshi while feeling indebted to Ieyasu.

;Episode 42 - ガラシャの魂 (Gracia's Spirit) - 21.3
Mitsunari enters the Osaka Castle. He sends out letters to the wives of warlords in Osaka ordering the wives and children to come to the castle—his aim is to take them as hostages. Hearing from Rokuheita the move of the Mori family, a powerful warlord family whose move would influence the fate of the battle, Chiyo has Mitsunari’s letter forwarded to Kazutoyo without opening it. Mitsunari’s follower comes and tells Chiyo to move to the Osaka Castle but she rejects. Around that time, Gracia or Garasha, Tadaoki Hosokawa’s wife who is Christian, also refuses to be taken hostage and chooses to die.

;Episode 43 - 決戦へ (Heading to the Decisive Battle) - 19.7
Kazutoyo hands to Ieyasu Mitsunari’s letter that Chiyo has forwarded to him, keeping it unopened in order to show his loyalty towards Ieyasu. Reading Mitsunari’s letter, which accuses Ieyasu and shows Mitsunari’s firm intention to wage a war against him, Ieyasu shows his deep appreciation for Kazutoyo’s deed. At the meeting on the following day, Kazutoyo declares in front of others that he will give his castle and domain to Ieyasu. Other lords follow him one after another. Closely united, Ieyasu’s army moves west to confront Mitsunari.

;Episode 44 - 関ヶ原 (Sekigahara) - 20.8
At last, the battle between Ieyasu and Mitsunari starts at Sekigahara. Mitsunari’s army has an advantage over Ieyasu’s, outnumbering the opponent. Kazutoyo’s troop is deployed by Ieyasu at the foot of a mountain, away from the main battlefield, to contain the troops of the Mori family. Knowing that his side is inferior in numbers, Kazutoyo prepares himself for death. In Osaka, Chiyo prays for her husband’s safety. With Rokuheita’s advice, Kazutoyo asks Ieyasu to let him join the major combat.

;Episode 45 - 三成死すとも (Even After Mitsunari's Death) - 21.1
Ieyasu’s troops have defeated Mitsunari’s. Mistunari is captured and pilloried in public. Kazutoyo promises Mitsunari to send his last message to Yodo, in which he tells her not to hesitate to go under the aegis of Ieyasu in order to protect her son and the Toyotomi family. Returning home, Kazutoyo tells Chiyo the emptiness he felt during the battle and weeps with her for the defeated warlords. Chiyo visits Yodo to tell her Mitsunari’s message. Yodo confides to Chiyo that Mitsunari was the only man she ever loved. Mitsunari is beheaded by Ieyasu. Kazutoyo is given an unexpected reward of Tosa Domain for his achievements in the battle. Kazutoyo’s dream of becoming a feudal lord finally comes true.

;Episode 46 - 土佐二十万石 (The 200,000-koku Tosa Province) - 19.1
Kazutoyo has been given Tosa Domain but he is worried whether the Chosokabe family, who has originally ruled the domain, will peacefully give it up. One of Ieyasu’s confidants Kazutoyo consults about it tells him to deal with them by force. Kazutoyo gets nervous about directing the troops himself as a commander. To conceal his anxiety, he acts arrogantly in front of Chiyo. Chiyo feels that her husband has changed after becoming a feudal lord. In Tosa, the lower-class followers of the former master have already started to rebel against Kazutoyo. Kazutoyo sends his brother Yasutoyo first to ensure safety and then finally moves into his domain with Chiyo. Rokuheita accompanies them as Kazutoyo’s retainer, expecting difficulties in completing subjugation of Tosa and determined to protect Chiyo.

;Episode 47 - 種崎浜の悲劇 (Tragedy at Tanezaki Beach) - 20.8
Kazutoyo is faced with difficulties in dealing with Tosa’s lower-class warriors who are loyal to the former lord as they rise one after another in revolt against the new ruler. Though she was shot and wounded by them, Chiyo is sympathetic to the followers and has strong doubts about Kazutoyo’s severe countermeasures. Disagreement between the two gradually makes the husband and wife estranged from each other. When Kazutoyo goes to see Ieyasu in Osaka, Ieyasu tells him to put down the rebellions as soon as possible. Coming back to Tosa, Kazutoyo decides to adopt Rokuheita’s idea to trick and kill all the rebel leaders.

;Episode 48 - 功名の果て (The Outcome) - 23.8
All the rebel leaders against Kazutoyo were killed, in exchange for a painful sacrifice—the lives of Rokuheita and Shinichiro. In tears and resentment against Kazutoyo, who allowed the tragedy happen, Chiyo leaves him and starts to live at a barren temple with Hiroi, her foster child who is now a priest. Deeply regretting, Kazutoyo pretends illness to call her back. Chiyo returns in a hurry to Kazutoyo, who apologizes her vowing to be a generous lord. A few years later, Ieyasu becomes the shogun. Kazutoyo and Chiyo move into the completed keep of the new castle. When the two are admiring the landscape from the castle top, Kazutoyo suddenly falls into a coma.

;Episode 49 (Final) - 永遠の夫婦 (Husband and Wife for Eternity) - 23.4
Though paralyzed on one side of the body, Kazutoyo gradually recovers with the help of Chiyo. Ieyasu, now officially granted the post of shogun, makes his granddaughter marry to the son of Hideyoshi, which Nene says is the beginning of another war. Soon Ieyasu resigns the post to his son, showing that the shogunate is to be hereditary. At the same time, Ieyasu promises Kazutoyo to marry his adopted daughter to Kazutoyo’s successor, asking in exchange for Kazutoyo’s help in realizing his unfulfilled ambition. Kazutoyo senses that Ieyasu is going to destroy the Toyotomi family. Returning to his domain, Kazutoyo gathers all his retainers and tells them to side with the Tokugawa clan in the case of a battle between the two families. As soon as he finishes talking, Kazutoyo falls down again. Recalling the old days spent with Chiyo, Kazutoyo dies in the wife’s arms. After Kazutoyo’s death, Chiyo moves to Kyoto and lives at her retreat. Asked by Nene, she goes to see Yodo and urges her to persuade her son to be obedient to Ieyasu. Yodo does not listen and dies in the Summer Siege of Osaka Castle. One year after the destruction of the Toyotomi clan, Ieyasu dies. Having seen the end of the turbulent age, Chiyo sets out on a journey to console the souls of the war dead.

;Highlights (two parts)
A two-part special program to wrap up "Komyo ga Tsuji". This special version rearranged the 49 episodes of the drama to trace the lives of the couple. Takeda Tetsuya, who played Kazutoyo’s senior retainer Kichibe and has a detailed knowledge of the Age of Civil War, will give comments from his viewpoints on famous figures and values at the age.
