In Qing dynasty China during Emperor Guang Xu's reign, Chun Er, an impoverished country youth, makes a living picking up manure in order to take care of his sickly mother and adopted younger sister Ling Er.  Liang Wen Xiu, the younger son of wealthy landowner Master Liang, discovers that he and Chun Er are actually half brothers by the same mother, and the two develop a close relationship.  In order to obtain enough money from the government to cure his mother's illness, Chun Er makes a tremendous personal sacrifice and becomes a eunuch, an act which greatly moves Wen Xiu.  Motivated by his mother's parting words, Wen Xiu decides to head to the nation's capital with Chun Er and take the imperial exams to have a chance at making a difference with his life by bringing hope and happiness to impoverished commoners like his pitiful brother and mother.

Synopsis
