A story of a man in his late 30s who happens to go on a pilgrimage on foot in Shikoku and considers the meaning of life through meeting various people on his way of the journey. Tokkyu Yamashita is a 37-year-old who works for a cell-phone company. When he returns home accompanied by his fiancée for his summer holidays, he is told that his father has developed colon cancer and believed to be within six months of death. Tokkyu's father, who is the chief priest of a small Buddhist temple and believes his wife's well-intentioned lie that Tokkyu will succeed him, advises the son to go on a pilgrimage.
