Synopsis

Originally a novel by Yamazaki Toyoko, and later a 1974 movie. The book depicts the conflicts within the Manpyo family, which is famous in Kansai's financial circles, amidst the tumultuous reorganisation of the financial industry of 1970s. Unlike the book, the eldest son, Teppei, and not the father, Daisuke, will be the central character of the story. The main rivalry depicts in the story is between Manpyo Daisuke (Kitaooji Kinya), a powerful banker, and his eldest son, Manpyo Teppei (Kimura Takuya), the executive managing director of a steel firm. For some reasons, Daisuke seem to dislike his own son.

The Manpyo family, live in a huge mansion, an unusual place for Japan, with flowered wallpaper, brocade sofas, abundant Greek statuary, stained-glass Moorish windows, plenty of crystal chandeliers(there are several in the living room alone) and three brass beds in the master bedroom.

Daisuke has a scheming, willful mistress, Takasu Aiko (Suzuki Kyoka), as well as a meek old-fashioned wife, Yasuko (Harada Mieko).

Daisuke and Yasuko has four children. The eldest child is Teppei, 34 years old. He is married to Sanae (Hasegawa Kyoko), and they have a baby boy. She was arranged married to Teppei for business reasons. The second child is Ginpei (Yamamoto Koji). In the beginning of the movie, Aiko, the mistress was arranging an omiai (arranged engagement/marriage) for Ginpei, to the daughter of Yasuda, a big company president. With this engagement, it can bring financial merit to the Manpyo firm. So, later Ginpei gets married to Yasuda Makiko (Yamada Yu). The third child is Ichiko (Fukuishi Kazue). She was betrothed to Mima Wataru (Nakamura Toru). Another result of an arranged marriage by Aiko, the mistress. The youngest child is Tsugiko (Aibu Saki). Among the three, Tsugiko is the closest sister to Teppei. Tsugiko has a boyfriend, Ichinose Yoshihiko (Narimiya Hiroki), the son of a factory's head, but Tsugiko keeps it from her father and the mistress.
