Synopsis

Bitter is the appropriate adjective for all the characters in Nyokei Kazoku. The story is lead by 35-year Fujiyo, the eldest daughter of a wealthy matrilineal family. Due to a short-term illness, the father passed away, leaving behind three daughters who all dislike each other, and a multi-billion yen estate. During the review of the will, a mistress named Fumio is revealed, who the family didn't know about. Fumino has an allie within the Yajima corporation - business associate Ono. Ono is handling the estate but definitely does not deserve such trust, being involved in all sorts of backroom financial shenanigans. Hovering in the background is Yoshizaburo, the head of a Japanese traditional dance school. He is covering his financial bets by going after both the eldest sister and the mistress. --- re-written by groink

Notes

  • The English translation of the series' name is Matrilineal Family. The background of this series verifies the translation. The Yajima family name has been carried over for five generations through the female side. Yoshizo married into the Yajima family. When his wife passed away, he retained a brother-in-law status within the family. So that he wouldn't lose control of his inheritence, he was not allowed to re-marry, which is why he instead chose to have a mistress (Fumino) instead. Also, Ryokichi married into the Yajima family by way of Chizu. Because he is the first male to enter the immediate family, he is entitled to become president of the Yajima corporation.
  • Matrilineal families are very uncommon in western society, but is somewhat common in Eastern Asia. This is necessary in the situation where a rich family consists only of daughters.
