In 2003, he debuted as a singer in TVXQ (otherwise known as Dong Bang Shin Ki) performing the group's debut song "Hug" on SBS network's BoA and Britney Spears showcase special.

In the same year, Max also sang a Japanese solo track "Wild Soul", for TVXQ's 17th Japanese single of the TRICK project.
In 2006, Max starred in miniseries Vacation along with his band mates. The drama was produced by SM Entertainment and had a special premiere and screening at the main auditorium of Yonsei University. ChangMin was the first choice for the leading role in the drama Snow Flower, but was replaced by label mate Kim Ki Bum from Super Junior due to TVXQ's hectic schedule.
