Synopsis

Goong (궁) is based on the same titled manhwa by Park So Hee.

Goong is story about the love in face of tradition, politics, and intrigue. Korea is a constitutional monarchy and the Royal Family lives in a grand Palace, the Goong. Story opens with a startling diagnosis that the King is terminally ill. Faced with the decreasing popularity among the public for the Royalty, a grand wedding for the Crown Prince, Lee Shin, is decided to be the best publicity move to improve the image of Royalty and at the same time prepare Shin for immediate succession. The intended bride? The headstrong, awkward, and sweet spirited Shin Chae-gyung that just happens to go to the same exclusive art school. Chae-gyung was betrothed to become the next Crown Princess by her grandfather and Shin's grandfather.

Chae-gyung has no illusions to become Cinderella, rather dreams of being a famous designers to support her family. Adding to her hesitation is Shin's proposal to fellow student Hyo-rin, a rejected proposal that she accidentally overheard. Unfortunately, in order to save her family from financial ruin, Chae-gyung accepted the betrothal.

Hyo-rin comes to regret her decision and seeks to hold on to Shin's heart, while Shin's cousin, Yul, returns only to find himself falling in love with the new Crown Princess. Shin seems to unable to let go of his old feelings for Hyo-rin even as he begin to develop news ones for Chae-gyung. Chae-gyung turns more and more toward Yul for emotional support as the customs of Goong and Shin's untouchable heart begin to break down her cheery facade.

As in life, humor maskes the pain in this beautifully shot drama.
