A Signature is a link to ones own user page. It has become common in wiki editing to mark the beginning of a signature with two hyphens. This way it is easier to distinguish signatures from other links. Example: --User:Username

Input

MediaWiki provides abbreviations to make the input of signatures easier. To add a signature you only have to input two hyphens followed by three, four or five tilde signs ( ~ ). The following table shows possible usages.

Input is converted by the wiki to:  and displayed on pages as:
--~~~ --Username --Username
--~~~~ --Username 21:25, 20 Aug 2005 (EDT) --Username 21:25, 20 Aug 2005 (EDT)
--~~~~~ -- 21:25, 20 Aug 2005 (EDT) -- 21:25, 20 Aug 2005 (EDT)

The user name is displayed only for registered users. For unregistered users the user's IP address is displayed instead. In the preferences everybody can configure an own signature.

Usage

Signatures are only added to contributions on talk pages. This way it is easier to see who left the comment and at which time. On articles signatures are usually not used because articles have in most cases many authors. A list of all edits can be seen through the article's history.
