Synopsis

During the Qing Dynasty, a prostitute decides to dress up her daughter, Lee Hoi Sum, (Leila Tong) as a boy in attempt to prevent her from following the same path as she did, and become a prostitute like her. The attempt is unsuccessful. Years later, Lee Hoi Sum is well-known throughout the capital as the most popular courtesan.

Grown up, Lee Hoi Sum makes a sudden decision in order to help her mother repay her gambling debts, which is to marry a rich eunuch. To her horror, he tries to violate her on their wedding night. To protect herself, Lee Hoi Sum murders her new husband. At the same time, Lee Hoi Sum's mother reunites with her husband, who happens to be a wealthy government official. Not long, Lee Hoi Sum is married again. This time, it is due to her wealthy father, who marries her off to Fong Tin Yi (Yan Kuan). However, what with Lee Hoi Sum's first love, Leung Yuk (Sammul Chan) returning home, drama ensues.

Alternate Synopsis

This story takes place during the end of the Qing dynasty and centers primarily around princess Yun Xiang and actor Wen Liang Yu's love story. Separated the night they'd planned to elope, Yun Xiang is rescued by an enemy of the imperial family, Fang Tian Yu. Tian Yu falls in love with Yun Xiang and frequently comes between Yun Xiang and Liang Yu, going as far as plotting to kill Liang Yu. Yun Xiang thinks Liang Yu has perished and tries to kill Tian Yu for revenge, but ends up on death row. Wealthy official Shen Shi Hao also loves Yun Xiang and saves her, at which time Yun Xiang discovers she's pregnant with Liang Yu's child. She marries Shi Hao in gratitude. Eighteen years later, Liang Yu returns as Beijing's most prominent mob ringleader. Unbeknownst to him, his son with Yun Xiang, Shen Zi Kang, has grown up and become a police captain dead set on capturing Liang Yu. To further complicate things, Zi Kang has fallen in love with Tian Yu's daughter Yu Yan, but she's in love with Liang Yu. (per Sina)
