Beautiful scenery combined with a touching love story, what else could you ask for? Summer Scent is the third installment of the season dramas, and definitely not as bad as the ratings indicate. Song Seung Hun came back to the season dramas and delivered an amazing performance as Yoo Min Woo, and you can truly feel his emotions and chemistry toward Son Ye Jin’s character, Shim Hye Won. Son Ye Jin’s portrayal of a quiet and kind girl added to the effect of the overall appeal of the drama.

The beginning of the drama was crucial to explain Min Woo’s disinterest in love and why he became attracted to Hye Won. It wasn’t the usual “Boy love girl who is with someone else, and girl has to choose between the two boys while the first boy has another girl” drama. It delved deeper and complicates the story by having Hye Won have Min Woo’s first love’s heart. This heart changes everything; who knows if Min Woo really loved Hye Won or the shadow of his deceased girlfriend? And same goes for Hye Won, is the heart making her love Min Woo or does she actually fell that way. Of course, this secret is not introduced until the second half of the story, but the dramatic irony of having the audience aware of this situation makes the viewer on the edge of their seats, waiting for the moment to come and everything crashing down.

Between the beginning when the couple falls in love and the climax when the secret is revealed comes the development of the story, which is lighthearted, coupled with a few disturbances from jealousy lovers, but intertwined in the gorgeous scenery that epitomizes the season summer, one of the themes of the story. Han Ji Hye put up a great performance as the jealous admirer, who uses a few tricks to guilt Hye Won to give up her love for Min Woo.

The question in the drama is, are you able to love truthfully with someone else’s heart, or will you be swayed by the heart’s own opinion? This is put to the test in the climax of the story, where the lovers were forced to be apart, and Hye Won’s heart can no longer support her because of the stress she put on it. It is a also a symbol that Min Woo’s former girlfriend is parting with him finally, after loving him again through someone else’s body.

Towards the end of the story, the producers gave everyone a shock when Min Woo received a message that Hye Won had a second transplant but it was unsuccessful and she has departed. However, it was merely to keep Min Woo from seeing her again because she does not know how she really feels with the new heart. The ending of the story is very ambiguous, just like in the previous season dramas, where it left an area for the viewer to ponder. Even though it was too vague and it should have said more, it is the beauty of the season dramas.

Summer Scent features an excellent soundtrack as well. “Secret” is especially capturing, with the sound of heartbeats from the beginning truly expresses the love of Min Woo and Hye Won. Although there were many classical songs on the soundtrack, each one was picked appropriately and fits with the calming scenery and atmosphere. Every time you hear the song Secret, you will feel the goose bumps emerge from your body and takes you to the touching and enduring love between Min Woo and Hye Won.

Overall rating: (4/5) See it, but be aware of slow parts.
