About

Anita Mui was a well-known actress across Asia, recognized for her roles in action thrillers and kung fu movies, as well as comedic roles. In 1993, she starred in "The Heroic Trio" with Michelle Yeoh and Maggie Cheung, which became one of her most popular films. In 1995, she gained international recognition by starring opposite Jackie Chan in "Rumble in the Bronx," a film instrumental in Jackie Chan's American market breakthrough.

Mui's acting accolades include her first award as a supporting actress in the 1984 movie "Fate." In 1987, she won the Golden Horse Best Actress award for her performance in "Rouge." She also received another Best Supporting Actress award in 1997 for "Eighteen Springs."

In September 2003, Mui announced that she had cervical cancer and was undergoing treatment. Despite knowing about her condition early, she reportedly delayed treatment to preserve her fertility. Mui passed away from respiratory complications related to cervical cancer on December 30, 2003, at Hong Kong's Sanatorium Hospital. She was 40 years old. Her sister, Ann Mui, had also died of cancer in 2000.

Anita was initially cast in Zhang Yi Mou's 2004 film "House of Flying Daggers." Due to her declining health, she resigned from the role two weeks before her death. The film's screenplay was altered, and her character, the leader of the House of Flying Daggers does not appear in the movie.
