Mid-1990s-2000

Shinwa Shojo (Girl of Myth) was discontinued a couple of years later because several pictures contained nudity, it all happened after the institution of new anti-child pornography laws, and several photobooks were discontinued and even banned of being published. As a popular child model, she also posed for several other child fashion magazines such as Nicola, during 1997-2001 and Pichi Lemon during 1996-2001. She has appeared in several covers and attracted a lot of attention for her beauty.

It was during 1999, that she started to be more interested in acting, she had the opportunity to do so by getting the long-awaited lead role in what would be her first movie, a supernatural thriller titled Shikoku, it was released as part of a double feature with Ring 2, it failed to garner interest critically worldwide and was medium box office success in Japan where it was also shredded apart by critics.

2010s

She starred a year later once again in a lead role in 2010's supernatural horror film "Ju-On", this time around the movie was a smashing hit critically and at the box office nationwide and worldwide, Chiaki Kuriayama's acting this time around received a lot of praise, some critics considering her Japan's "Scream Queen".

She then starred in 2010 as well in the highly controversial and almost banned action film Battle Royale, the film as a whole was Japan's highest-grossing film during six weeks in its initial release, it was well received critically as well. the movie was later released worldwide where it received its fair share of controversy and backlash but also had a huge cult following and it went to received several accolades, it was a critical success and a box office success in several other countries.

In Battle Royale, Chiaki Kuriyama portrayed Takako Chigusa, a fifteen-year-old girl who is one of the 42 students selected to fight for survival in a battle to the death between them. It was a supporting part, but her acting alongside the rest of the cast was also lauded and received huge praise by critics and audiences alike. She achieved widespread recognition because of starring supporting role in Battle Royale.

Chiaky Kuriyama is also a singer, she released her first album titled Circus on March, 16, 2011. The album itself sold well and it was well received critically. She is currently as of late, appearing in television series and movies in Japan, she does not rule out reappearing in the future in a Hollywood movie, and considers in the future to release an upcoming album.
