It's hard to imagine the impact and the enormous repercussion that has had this drama in China alone, his trailer came to present more than a million views, on the day of its release many tuned in to see the first episode, more this say it was a success in rating, came to have more than 40 billion views.

It's more than sure that success precedes it at the audience level, but in terms of critical appraisal, it's something completely different.

Pacing

First of all it is an extensive drama, that tries to adapt the book, emphasis in "tries," although at the beginning of the drama they knew how to tell the story in an attractive way and above all simple, without any complication.

Although after a certain number of episodes everything started to get ugly quickly, the pacing was absolutely incoherent, making the whole narrative a complete mess.

in the book an important point of it was to travel in time, the drama not knowing how to adapt the story correctly made that important point became something that caused many gaps in the plot.

Another important detail to highlight is that they focused a lot of development on the romance of Yu Wen Yue and Chu Qiao's characters, but it was developed at the same time very quickly, at the expense of the development of the other events in the plot.

The drama also suffers the case of covering less of the original material to make way for a probable sequel in the future. This gives the hint that the production behind the drama was already anticipating a high level of success with the drama.

Characters

Yan Xun's conflict was the object of a constant change in the drama, but it was handled in a credible way, viewers could actually believe that Yan Xu as the story progressed had gone from: cheerful and optimistic to vengeful and resentful.

Chun Er and Yuan Song, on the other hand, were the typical optimistic characters, Chun Er turned out to be a badly developed character in the confines of the story and even badly acted by the actress who did not show the right range of emotions, Yuan Song turned out to be quite interesting as a character, a tragic victim of a cruel world but who nevertheless trusted that there was a place for good in the world, was undoubtedly touching and his philosophy was fascinating and had a place in the theme of the narrative, apart from the fact that the actor was excellent in his interpretation of the character.

Chu Qiao was undoubtedly a mysterious character, the drama was able to present her as someone with whom the characters should not cross him, although every change when it began to acquire more relevance in the plot and the script simply failed her as a character, the actress was good in the role, but the script presented her as a dynamic character and always strong, but was always rescued Yu Wen Yue or Yan Xu.

Performances

The central characters were undoubtedly good in their roles, with one notable exception, in terms of secondary and more characters, their actors knew how to interpret well the roles that were given to them.

Costumes & Sets

The costuming in the drama was very exquisite and very well crafted individually, it was simplistic but also with a high sense of elegance. As for the sets, it was a job well done.

Cinematography

The drama was predominantly in favor or perhaps interested and in the duality of both black and white, there were also pastel colors predominantly in the background. An issue was that the characters were very dark colors and there it was a mute filter for the filming of several action sequences that are good in slow-mo, but bad in motion.

It was used sparingly and it was not obvious.

Musical Score & Soundtrack

The musical score was delightful and it hit all the keynotes perfectly in the melodramatic scenes without being overbearing, and the theme songs were absolutely excellent.

Conclusion

The drama was a mixed bag, the beginning managed to show a lot of promise only to deflate itself the more it went on. It lacks quality in the storytelling department and production values as well, the plot progression was astonishingly poor and the ending was disappointing and terrible in equal measure.
