No need to worry about losing your time binge-watching another stale drama, why? Because this drama is going to have you at the edge of your seat. It has the perfect flourishes that make a drama a definitive must-watch! What does it have to its favor? An overarching central mystery? Check! Nail-biting cliffhangers? Check! Astonishingly brilliant special effects? Check! A fantasy or supernatural element that will help you suspend your disbelief? Check! A heart-wrenching dramatic romance? Check and mate!
Lee Jong Suk reaffirms once more what a good actor he is in While Were You Sleeping, long gone are the days of his debut in 2010's Prosecutor Princess, all thanks in part of While You Were Sleeping scriptwriter Park Hye Ryun who has found her perfect leading man for a couple of dramas she has written previously, 2013's I Can Hear Your Voice and 2015's Pinocchio. Lee Jong Suk's range as an actor truly shows in his performance as Jung Jae Chan, a cold-hearted prosecutor with a dark shadow lingering over his past in present, who during the course of the drama reveals his most buried inner-feelings to Bae Suzy's character Nam Hong Joo. Both of them are megastars in South Korea and as this drama proves it without a shadow of a doubt, they are a match made in heaven. Quite a coupling indeed.
Meanwhile, the conflict arises when you least suspect by a terrifying force of villainy that will have you fuming in rage, something to be expected as always, after all, is Dramaland, everything can happen. We all drama fans are a bit masochistic for that anyway. The acting is top notch for everyone involved, I like how the characters especially have each and every one of them their little quirk or some bit of nuance into their portrayal of the characters to make them more relatable and real life for the viewers.
The script written by Park Hye Ryun has many twists and turns that will have you gasping for air after a heart-stopping moment, believe me, there are plenty of those, the direction is absolutely flawless, although some camera work needed more work or effort put into it, the editing is masterful but flawed in some scenes and moments that are scattered over the course of the drama's run, the soundtrack is quite a treat for drama lovers, it has songs courtesy of Davichi, Kim Na Young and even Eddy Kim, but more surprising of all is that Suzy and Lee Jong Suk have respectively two songs each, and both songs are such a joy to listen to.
My recommendation better binge-watch this drama with your significant other because it's going to be the real treat for date night. 9.5/10!
