Synopsis

After China's humiliating defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War, Zhang Jian—though a top scholar—abandons politics to pursue a new path: industry. He founds Dasheng Cotton Mill, China's first private textile enterprise, overcoming financial ruin and foreign sabotage. As Japanese industrialist Fujita Ichiro ruthlessly corners the market, Zhang fights back with land reclamation and diversified ventures. He also builds schools, hospitals, and public works in Nantong, pioneering social reform. But in a fractured empire, his "gentle reform" is crushed by the court, and foreign powers tighten their grip. Despite his relentless efforts, his empire collapses, and he dies exhausted—a visionary who never saw his dream fulfilled.
