At an international space camp many years ago, two boys, Wu Wei and Ying Zi Qi, aspired to be successful astronauts. Later, the second phase of the planned project failed twice in a row, and the Chief Engineer Qin of the control center issued a military order to face more complicated follow-up lunar detection and control work. He gathered five talents from different fields, Wu Wei , Ying Zi Qi, Bai Yan, Miao Xinxian, and Yang Rui to formed a youth commando team of the control center, the Shepherd Team, hoping to create Chinese characteristics for the third phase of Haoyue project.

Determined to join the Flight Control Center, he is devastated when he fails the interview and is instead assigned to work in the archives. Meanwhile, Ying Ziqi, a brilliant and aloof top student with whom Wu Wei shares a long-standing rivalry, successfully secures a position in the Flight Control Center. While working in the archives, Wu Wei gains valuable experience and matures into a dependable professional. Recognizing his potential, mentor Qin Bojun personally selects him to join the Flight Control Department’s elite “Mu Xing” team, where he reunites with Ying Ziqi as a teammate.  
  
In the face of the doubts of other control teams, the relapse of Chief Qin’s illness, and a series of collisions between ideals and reality, the young researchers of the Shepherd Team have experienced failures and hesitations. After hard work and growth in the process, an unprecedented "Chinese ballistic" was designed for the moon landing and return module of the Haoyue Phase III project.
