The story is about a recent college graduate, Matsushita Sakura (Elizabeth), a fourth-generation Japanese American woman born and raised in Hawaii. Sakura's ''haole'' boyfriend, Roby, gets a job in New York and plans to take Sakura with him. Sakura is unhappy about the possible move so far across the country from her family. Roby is shocked to hear the news, and immediately asks Sakura to marry him. Although she does accept the proposal, Roby and Sakura agree to delay their wedding for one year until she comes back to Hawaii. Sakura will be staying with her maternal grandparents.
