Kazutoyo is sent to Okazaki to persuade Ieyasu, who has been ignoring Hideyoshi’s call to make an appearance in Kyoto to show his obedience to Hideyoshi. Kazutoyo’s effort to talk the experienced warlord into visiting Kyoto ends in failure. Around that time, a massive earthquake hits Nagahama and causes the collapse of the Nagahama Castle, where Chiyo and Yone live. Crawling out of the debris, Chiyo looks for her daughter. Kazutoyo rushes home and finds that Yone has died in the disaster.

Episode 32 - ()

To make Ieyasu submit to the Toyotomi family, Hideyoshi maneuvers a plan to marry his own sister Asahi to Ieyasu as a hostage. Chiyo is asked by Nene to help her persuade Asahi to divorce her current husband, but Chiyo decides to shelter Asahi in Nagahama, hearing Hideyoshi’s intentions.

Hideyoshi starts an invasion of Kyusyu, but Kazutoyo is left behind in Osaka. Irritated at losing the opportunity to fight and achieve a feat, Kazutoyo keeps arguing with his brother over trivial matters. Worried about their quarrels, Chiyo visits their mother and finds her ill in bed. Chiyo takes care of her but her mother-in-law dies shortly afterward. Hearing their mother’s last words from Chiyo, Kazutoyo and his brother make up with each other.

One day, Chiyo finds a baby boy abandoned at the gate of her residence. Getting Kazutoyo’s consent, Chiyo decides to bring up the baby herself and names him Hiroi. Meanwhile, Kazutoyo is appointed as one of the facilitators for the Emperor’s visit to Hideyoshi’s luxurious residence in Kyoto. At the same time, Chiyo is asked by Nene to sew a kimono for the event.
