Kazutoyo is sent to Okazaki to persuade Ieyasu, who has been ignoring Hideyoshi’s call to make an appearance in Kyoto to show his obedience to Hideyoshi. Kazutoyo’s effort to talk the experienced warlord into visiting Kyoto ends in failure. Around that time, a massive earthquake hits Nagahama and causes the collapse of the Nagahama Castle, where Chiyo and Yone live. Crawling out of the debris, Chiyo looks for her daughter. Kazutoyo rushes home and finds that Yone has died in the disaster.

To make Ieyasu submit to the Toyotomi family, Hideyoshi maneuvers a plan to marry his own sister Asahi to Ieyasu as a hostage. Chiyo is asked by Nene to help her persuade Asahi to divorce her current husband, but Chiyo decides to shelter Asahi in Nagahama, hearing Hideyoshi’s intentions.

At the same time, Chiyo is asked by Nene to sew a kimono for the event.

In the city of Kyoto, Chiyo runs into Jinbe, Asahi’s former husband, who is disguised as a vendor. She speaks to him but he refuses to identify himself. Around that time, Asahi is on her deathbed at Hideyoshi’s residence in Kyoto. Chiyo takes Jinbe to see Asahi, hiding his identity because the former husband would not be allowed to meet her. Jinbe tells Asahi his true feelings towards her. Meanwhile, Hideyoshi moves his troops to Odawara in order to beat the Hojo family and complete the unification of the country. Kazutoyo goes to the front under the command of Hidetsugu, Hideyoshi’s nephew.

Hideyoshi’s young son whom Yodo (Chacha) gave birth to suddenly dies. Yodo suspects that Nene has poisoned her son. Chiyo is called and asked by Nene to support Hidetsugu as the successor to Hideyoshi. Grieving over his son and looking for something to devote as an escape from the sorrow, Hideyoshi decides to invade Korea. Hideyoshi passes the rank of Kanpaku to Hidetsugu and names him the top commander while he is away for the Korean invasion. Chiyo visits Hidetsugu and feels uneasy about his eagerness to rule over the whole country.

Yodo gives birth to another baby boy of Hideyoshi, which puts Hidetsugu’s position as the successor to Hideyoshi at stake. Though he understands such a circumstance, Hidetsugu tells Chiyo that he is determined to fulfill his duty as the Kanpaku. Meanwhile, Hideyoshi begins to treat Hidetsugu as a nuisance without disguise. As a chief retainer of Hidetsugu, Kazutoyo is torn between the Kanpaku and Hideyoshi. One day, some of Hidetsugu’s retainers are captured by order of Hideyoshi for plotting treason against Hideyoshi.

Kazutoyo visits Hidetsugu and tries to persuade him to defend himself in front of Hideyoshi. Hidetsugu’s followers try to stop their master from going to see Hideyoshi. As tensions grow between the retainers of Kazutoyo and those of Hidetsugu, Chiyo breaks in. She urges Hidetsugu to quit being a samurai and become a Buddhist monk so that his life will be spared. However, Hidetsugu makes up his mind to see his powerful uncle.

Hideyoshi holds a coming-of-age ceremony for his son Hideyori, though the son is only four years old. Kazutoyo attends the ceremony and feels that his mater has aged and become high-handed. Meanwhile, Chiyo is called and threatened by Yodo that Kazutoyo’s life will be jeopardized if Chiyo remains on Nene’s side. Worried about the future of the Yamauchi family, Chiyo plans to have a housemaid bear Kazutoyo’s heir.

Hideyoshi has died. According to the master’s will, Mitsunari Ishida calls back Hideyoshi’s retainers who have been fighting in the Korean Peninsula. Hearing for the first time their master’s death, those followers including Kiyomasa Kato and Masanori Fukushima turn their anger over the useless battles on Mitsunari. Now the warlords who have served under Hideyoshi start to split into two groups: one led by Mitsunari and the other by Ieyasu. After Mitsunari accuses Ieyasu of disobeying Hideyoshi’s instructions, Kiyomasa and Masanori who have decided to side with Ieyasu take up arms against Mitsunari. Kazutoyo takes action to save Mitsunari, believing in Mitsunari’s loyalty towards their late master’s family.

Mitsunari retreats to his domain and prepares for battles ahead. Around that time, Ieyasu enters the Osaka Castle with thousands of troops to drive Mitsunari to wage a war against him; if a war occurs, Ieyasu can beat not only Mitsunari but also other lords who sides Mitsunari, and then seize power. Seeing Ieyasu’s move, Nene tells Chiyo that the only choice left for Yodo and Hideyori to survive is to go under the aegis of Ieyasu. Chiyo asks Nene if she is suggesting that the Yamauchi family should do the same as well. Kazutoyo wavers over whether to side with Mitsunari or Ieyasu, as he wants to remain loyal to Hideyoshi while feeling indebted to Ieyasu.

Mitsunari enters the Osaka Castle. He sends out letters to the wives of warlords in Osaka ordering the wives and children to come to the castle—his aim is to take them as hostages. Hearing from Rokuheita the move of the Mori family, a powerful warlord family whose move would influence the fate of the battle, Chiyo has Mitsunari’s letter forwarded to Kazutoyo without opening it. Mitsunari’s follower comes and tells Chiyo to move to the Osaka Castle but she rejects. Around that time, Gracia or Garasha, Tadaoki Hosokawa’s wife who is Christian, also refuses to be taken hostage and chooses to die.

Kazutoyo hands to Ieyasu Mitsunari’s letter that Chiyo has forwarded to him, keeping it unopened in order to show his loyalty towards Ieyasu. Reading Mitsunari’s letter, which accuses Ieyasu and shows Mitsunari’s firm intention to wage a war against him, Ieyasu shows his deep appreciation for Kazutoyo’s deed. At the meeting on the following day, Kazutoyo declares in front of others that he will give his castle and domain to Ieyasu. Other lords follow him one after another.
