Synopsis

Eight hundred years ago, Xie Lian was the Crown Prince of the Xian Le kingdom. He was beloved by his citizens. He ascended to the Heavens at a young age; however, due to unfortunate circumstances, was quickly banished back to the mortal realm. Years later, he ascends again–only to be banished again a few minutes after his ascension.

Now, eight hundred years later, Xie Lian ascends to the Heavens for the third time as the laughing stock among all three realms. On his first task as a god thrice ascended, he meets a mysterious demon named Hua Cheng who rules the ghost world and terrifies the Heavens, yet, unbeknownst to Xie Lian, Hua Cheng has been paying attention to him for a very, very long time.

Ren Yan Kai Hua Cheng The Ghost King.
One of the Four Great Calamities, "Bloody Rain Flower-Snatcher", and the most famed of the three Devastation-class Demons in the Ghost World. Referred to as San Lang by Xie Lian.
He wields the Eming sabre, and is known for his ability to shapeshift and control deathly spirit butterflies.
When he was a human being (named Hong Hong'er), he was saved by Xie Lian and thus fell in love with him and remained devoted to him for the past eight hundred years.

He has a habit of rolling his eyes in disgust constantly, and is known for his rivalry with Feng Xin.

He wields a heavy sword that can attract gold.
He is known for being obtuse and overly straightforward.

He was an orphan who was taken in as a disciple junior by Yin Yu, and was appointed as his deputy general following his ascension.
He is known for his rash temper, and often beats up his own followers.
Yin Yu The former martial god who oversees the Western area.
He was a former cultivator, and Quan Yizhen's senior.
He is a polite and gentle person, but is poor in cultivation, causing his position to be eventually overtaken by Quan Yizhen. He was banished to the mortal world after a misunderstanding caused by the Embroidered Uniform Deity, and became one of Hua Cheng's subordinates.

Shi Qingxuan The Wind Master.
One of the Four Famous Tales, "The Young Lord Who Poured Wine". He often appears as a female, hence is also known by the nickname of "Lady Wind Master". Younger brother of Shi Wudu.
He wields the Wind Master fan.
He is known for his easygoing personality, making him popular among the gods.
He was known for his ill-fate caused by the curse of the Reverend of Empty Words, but his fate was turned around with the help of his brother, who exchanged his fate with He Xuan.
Shi Wudu The Water Master. Also known as Shui Hengtian.
One of the three "poison tumors" of the Heavenly Court. Shi Qingxuan's elder brother.
He wields the Water Master fan.
He was the one who switched the fates of Shi Qingxuan and He Xuan, causing He Xuan to die.

Xuan Lu Yu Shihuang The Rain Master.
One of the Four Famous Tales, "The Princess Who Slit Her Throat".
She was the princess and last monarch of Yushi Kingdom.
She wields the Yulong sword and Yushi kasa, and owns the gold-ringed black cow mount.
Ming Yi The Earth Master.
His identity was taken over by He Xuan as a disguise in the Heavenly Court.
He wields the Yue Ya shovel.
He is known for his quiet and reticent personality, and his love for food.

Ghosts

A powerful demon who resides in the Black Water Ghost City.
He often disguises as Ming Yi the Earth Master, and also has up to 50 different identities in the Heavenly Court.
He was a scholar who was fated to rise into Heaven and become a God. However he was cheated of his tribulation by Shi Wudu who exchanged his fate with Shi Qingxuan.
He cares deeply for Shi Qingxuan, despite the misunderstanding and grudge between them.
Zhu Zan Jin Qi Rong One of the Four Great Calamities, "Green Light Wandering Nights". A wrath-class demon.
He was a prince of the Xian Le kingdom, and is Xie Lian's cousin.
He is evil, petty and known for his low-class ways.
He was completely infatuated with Xie Lian before his descent, but afterward hated him completely, and goes out of his way to make life difficult for him.
Bai Wuxiang One of the Four Great Calamities, "White-Clothed Calamity", and one of the three Devastation-class Demons in the Ghost World.
He was the Crown prince of Wuyong kingdom.
He was revealed to be the alter-ego of Jun Wu.
He and Xie Lian shared similar fates, and thus he wanted to groom Xie Lian to become his successor.
Ban Yue Royal Advisor of Ban Yue kingdom. One of the "twin devil master".
She is known for her ability to summon and control devil scorpions.
Rong Guang Pei Ming's subordinate.
A cunning man who wanted to use Pei Ming to achieve power. After his death, his soul merged with the Guang Ming sword.
