He began to gain notoriety in 2002, when he joined the cast of the drama Flowing River where he personified the character, Kim Seok Joo, being this character very liked by viewers. He later starred in 2005, in SBS romantic drama series Lovers in Prague as the character Choi Sang Hyun, a detective with a deeply traumatic past, the drama was written by Kim Eun Sook and it was part of what is known as the Lovers trilogy. Lovers in Prague in particular was the second one of the all-around famous trilogy, it reached 26-27% viewership on average but at its peak it reached an astonishing 31%, making the drama a success, and it was well received critically as well.
In the year 2008, he agreed to take the leading role in My Wife Got Married where he portrayed Noh Deok Hoon, it was adapted and based on the novel of the same name by Park Hyun Wook. The film was a success at the box office and it was well received by critics. A couple of years later, he starred once again the leading role of the servant Bang Ja in 2010's historical romantic drama The Servant. Tthe film was a huge hit at the box office; critics and audiences alike were captivated by Kim Joo Hyuk's performance.
2012-2017
In 2012, he made his drama comeback by starring in the lead role in MBC's Soldier where he took the lead role of Kim Jun, the ninth military leader during Goryeo's military regime. The drama was a success and his acting was positively appreciated by viewers and critics.
In 2013, he accepted the lead role of famous court physician Heo Jun of the Joseon dynasty in MBC's Gu Am Heo Joon. It was a great acting risk as Heo Jun is esteemed to this day by many South Koreans, but Kim Joo Hyuk's performance broke expectations and the drama was an unprecedented success. That same year he joined the main cast of the 2 Days & 1 Night variety program where he appeared until 2015. Later he would continue to make guest appearances in 2017.
On September 2016, Kim Joo Hyuk appeared in the lead role in the film Yourself and Yours alongside co-star Lee Yo Young. A year later on September 2017, he decided to take the lead role in tvN's Argon where he portrayed the imposing and highly professional news anchor, reporter, and leader of the titled news program. The drama was Kim Joo Hyuk's last appearance before his death that same year.
Death
On October 30, 2017, during 4:30 pm KST in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Kim had a car accident when his vehicle rolled over on the road. He was rushed to Konkuk University Hospital where two hours later he died from a fatal blow to the head. In early reports from the police and the Konkuk University Medical Center, it was mentioned that the accident seemed to have occurred after the famous actor had suffered symptoms similar to those of a myocardial infarction. The police stated shortly thereafter that the actor had shown no sign of having suffered a heart attack and that he had no trace of alcohol in his blood according to an autopsy performed on the body.
