Synopsis
I Love the Mermaid is a romantic fantasy television drama filmed in Taiwan starring Japanese superstar Sakai Noriko.
In the series, Sakai plays Meimei, a kind, innocent, and lovable little mermaid. By chance, Meimei rescues a young man named Shaoqi after he accidentally drowns while surfing at the beach. She also finds a jade pendant that Shaoqi was wearing, which has fallen to the seabed. Guided by Uncle Turtle and Grandma Fish, Meimei comes ashore in search of Shaoqi. Her adventures in the human world lead to many strange, dramatic, and twist-filled events.
Other principal cast members include well-known Taiwanese actors Chin Feng (Qin Feng), Su Ming-ming, Chen Jun-sheng, and Jin Ming.
After the drama was introduced to television stations across mainland China in the mid-1990s, it quickly achieved very high ratings and sparked a wave of enthusiasm for Sakai, often referred to as the "Noriko Sakai craze."
Unfortunately, during a copyright dispute between the Taiwanese production company and a Japanese television network, the original master tapes were reportedly destroyed. As a result, the series went out of print and became extremely difficult to obtain, much to the disappointment of many fans.
