Synopsis

During the 4th century, war broke out between the feudal Northern Wei dynasty and Southern Liang dynasties, leading Liang's General Lin Xie to take his only child, the 19 year old Lin Shu, to battle. Unexpectedly, Lin Xie was framed by a political rival, causing the unjust deaths of seventy thousand Chiyan army soldiers, just after they drove off the hostile Wei forces.

After barely escaping with his life, Lin Shu establishes the Jiangzuo Alliance with the help of Langya Hall and makes a name for himself as Mei Changsu, chief of the pugilistic world. Under the alias of Su Zhe, he returns to the capital of Liang 12 years on to overturn the injustices imposed on the Chiyan Army and secretly assist his friend the unfavoured Prince Xiao Jingyan in his battle for the throne.

  • Filming locations: Hengdian World Studio, Xiangshan Film City, Shihu City, Zhexi Grand Grassland Gumingjiu Cultural Village, Yandang Mountains
  • Due to the drama being under Daylight Entertainment which also produced The Disguiser, much of the ensemble cast remain the same.
  • Hu Ge has filmed many costume dramas before, but it is his first historical drama without any fight scenes.
  • The protagonist Mei Chang Su experienced a terrible tragedy before escaping death. Back in 2006, Hu Ge got into a serious car accident that almost took his life, which is why he finds parallels between himself and his character.
  • It is Wang Kai's first time acting in a historical drama, and it proved to be a breakout role for him as an actor.
  • Its sequel Nirvana in Fire: The Wind Blows in Changlin continues the storyline to tell the story of the next generation.
  • The source novel was initially supposed to be in the danmei genre (BL-novel), but the story was eventually changed.
