Senior detective Miyashita Fumiya of the First Investigative Division’s Fifth Section has lived with the principle not get involved in trouble at his workplace or at home. Because his boss Fujiura Shizuka has reached retirement age, he has to make an appearance at her farewell party although he is not in the mood. The other member besides Miyashita, is the director Hasumi Daigo. The party comes to life, but Hasumi is called on his mobile phone and has to excuse himself halfway.

Several days later, the body of a woman is found strangled at a housing complex. The estimated time of death happens to be the same time that Shizuka’s farewell party was being held. The victim was killed in her outdoor clothes. It appears that she was attacked by the criminal who was hiding indoors when she came home. Miyashita and the other detectives investigate the case under the supervision of the director Sakaegawa Yoshihisa who is fired up about regaining the honour of the police because of the continuous scandals within the prefectural police recently.

Miyashita, who is headed to the vicinity of the murder scene to question witnesses, encounters Suzaki Takashi of the crime lab. On the same day of the strangulation case, there was a hit-and-run incident on a road near the murder scene and he hears that a man called Tabata Tadayuki died. Then he receives information that a man had tried to use Tabata’s credit cards which had been taken away. While going through the security camera footage for clues to identify the criminal, Miyashita is summoned by the veteran detective Shimokawa Masaharu of Higashi Fukatsu Police Precinct. The person caught on camera resembles Kanaya Jiro who was arrested and investigated for attempted murder seven years ago. Furthermore, Kanaya was recently released from prison and had come to Shimokawa’s place to give his greetings. The investigation makes considerable progress due to Shimokawa’s information and Kanaya is captured in Tokyo. Miyashita interrogates Kanaya, but Kanaya consistently denies the murder charge. In addition, Miyashita is suddenly dropped from the investigation. He hears that it is the direct orders of the police commissioner, Murase Takao, and has no choice but to obey. Kanaya’s charge is limited to credit card theft. Hamura Makoto, a Musashi Shinpo reporter who is suspicious of the sudden change in the direction of the investigation, calls on the retired Shizuka. Unhappy with the orders of the top brass, Miyashita takes a trip to the housing complex again and sees Shizuka there. She tells him that there is a possibility that Kanaya witnessed the hit-and-run incident. And gradually the two cases start to show a connection that will shake the police organization. - Jdrama Weblog
