Koshien Poster Girl Erika Toda
Teen actress Erika Toda will follow a long line of top actresses when she serves as the Victor Koshien Poster Girl at this year's National High School Baseball Tournament at Koshien Stadium next month.
Toda, 16, follows the likes of Sakai Noriko, Kanno Miho, Ueto Aya and Ishihara Satomi to become one of the faces of the tournament.
The Victor Company of Japan has since 1980 been conducting a poster campaign to coincide with the national high school baseball tournament, with up-and-coming actresses and young baseball players becoming the focus of the campaign since 1987.
"I was really surprised to be picked," Toda said at a news conference in a Tokyo hotel on Thursday. "I was a little bit worried for a while about whether I was the best choice, but I plan to give it everything I've got."
Toda said she has a favorite among the four posters that will be used in the campaign - a shot taken of her at an Enoshima Electric Railway Line platform.
"I put on an expression that was supposed to show me giving encouragement to a high school baseball player playing his heart out," she said.
Judges said Toda was selected as the poster girl because of her "rich expression, translucence and purity."
Toda sent a message of support to high school baseball teams currently battling out regional playoffs to determine who will play in the prestigious summer tournament at Koshien.
"I'm backing you from the bottom of my heart. Don't give in, give everything," she said.
JVC has created four posters for the campaign. The posters differ according to where they will be placed.
JVC will put up the posters from mid-August and leave them there for the duration of the summer tournament. Posters will be placed at electronics stores, and around the nearest station of schools competing in the baseball fiesta.
Toda will also write a diary that will be on JVC's official Koshien site, which opened Thursday.
"Calling You," an original DVD with skits related to the posters featuring a schoolgirl supporting a high school baseball player will go on sale on Oct. 7. (Mainichi)
