Synopsis
Celebrating the 40th anniversary of China’s open-door policy, the drama revolves around the stories of Song Yunhui, Lei Dongbao and Yang Xun, who are representatives of a whole generation of people who took advantage of the economic reforms that were being rolled out in 1970s China.

- To recreate the feel of the era, the art direction budget for this drama was more than twice that of other normal TV dramas, and it was the first time that an ultra-wide aspect ratio was used for filming, while the actors' salaries did not exceed 50% of the total cost.
- In order to fit the character of Song Yunhui in the drama, Wang Kai lost weight until he was thin; while Yang Shuo gained weight to better portray Lei Dongbao, the brigade secretary of Xiaolei Village.
- The original author of the TV series Ode to Joy produced by Daylight Entertainment is also A Nai. When buying the rights to "Ode to Joy", producer Hou Hong Liang was actually aiming to adapt "The Great River Flows East" and signed "Ode to Joy" as a side project.
- In order to protect the good ecological environment of the filming location, the crew required that as little trash as possible be generated during filming, and that any trash generated be cleaned up in a timely manner.
- To ensure the smooth filming, the crew worked tirelessly in the snow to build sets before filming began, ensuring safety at all times. Every day after work, the workers' shoes were soaked through.
