Yang Mi was born on September 12, 1986 in the Xuanwu District of Beijing (That is now part of the new Xicheng District of Beijing), her father Yang Xiaolin is a policeman, and her mother Yang Chunling is a full-time housewife. With both of her parents family names Yang, she was named Mi which means the mathematical term 'power' in Chinese. When she was a child, she lived near Niujie. She is good at playing table tennis, playing badminton, swimming, and skating. Yang mi was a rather energetic child, she couldn’t calm down when she learned something. At that time, the Chinese Children’s Film Studio held a children’s film and television performance training class. Yang Mi’s parents enroll her in performance classes, her elementary school period was spent in Beijing Xuanwu Experimental Primary School (which no longer exists). She had a good academic performance when she was in elementary school, and she was a squad leader from the first grade to the third grade.

The now actress began her career at the tender age of 4. In 1990, historical drama director Jialin Chen found Yang mi's talent in acting and offered her a role in the TV series "Tang Ming Emperor" as the little princess. Then, in the same year, she showed her face in the comedy superstar Stephen Chow's movie "Wu zhuangyuan Su Qi-er" as Chow's daughter. In the next few years, she accepted some roles in certain TV series and quit performance for about 10 years. At 17, when still in high school, she came back to performing like a professional. In 2004, she played the role of 'Guo Xiang' in the TV series "Return of the Condor Heroes" adapted from a famous Chinese swordsmen novel. This role left a very deep impression on audiences and established her career in TV. She entered Performance Institute of Beijing Film Academy the next year.
