In 1965, Hanaoka Machiko is a 37-year-old single woman who lives with her mother in Osaka City. Machiko works at a hardware store in the city while attending writer’s school to become a novelist. One day, she gets to know Tokunaga Kenjiro, a medical practitioner, through her friend at the school. Kenjiro is a widower with five children. The two see each other for a while, and one day Kenjiro suddenly asks Machiko to marry him.
