The anniversary of the death of Kenjiro’s first wife is drawing near and Machiko decides to have a Buddhist memorial service at home. Kenjiro agrees with her but his younger sister opposes saying it would make the children sad again. Neighbors hesitate to participate as well, thinking that a memorial service for the first wife would be uncomfortable for Machiko. One day, Kiyoshi, the eldest son of Kenjiro, shows Machiko the notes his mother had written about household matters.
