Machiko starts writing about her and her family at the time of the war. In 1943, she was a 15-year-old girl who liked to write patriotic novels. Her family’s photo studio was busy, with a number of those drafted and their families came to take portraits. One of the photographers working there was sent to war as well. One day, a famous stage actress visited the studio. With this as a start, Machiko’s grandfather Tsunetaro expanded the family-run business to photograph the revue company’s performances. Machiko’s father Tokuichi, who is a careful worker, quarrels with Tsunetaro over the amount of orders they should take. In summer, Machiko’s cousin Shinji visited the family during the university summer break. Machiko was fond of him and she had a mixed feeling to know he wanted to go to war.
