While Kenjiro and Machiko are away from home for one day, Kihachiro and Ishi, Kenjiro’s parents, look after the children. In the night, the youngest daughter Aki gets injured. Aki complains of pain again in the midnight but Kihachiro has gone out for drinking. When Machiko returns home, Ishi is angry at her husband. She complains to Machiko that he always forgets something important, telling her about their daughter who died just three months after her birth. Hearing this from Machiko, Kenjiro says Ishi is forgetting an important thing also—Kenjiro became a doctor since Kihachiro wanted him to do so from grief for his daughter’s death. The parents do not talk to each other and a few days later, Kihachiro suddenly falls unconscious.
