Machiko goes on writing the story about her family for its ending. At the news of an air raid on Osaka, Machiko left her volunteer labor away in Hyogo Prefecture and returned home, where she found the photo studio burned down. All the members of her family were safe and they moved into an apartment. Tokuichi came down with illness and died in hard days after the war. Having finished the literary work, Machiko publishes it as a book. One day, Machiko’s younger sister Takako comes and asks Machiko to take care of her daughter Yoshimi for a few days. Taking care of Yoshimi, Machiko becomes concerned about Takako’s parenting, since Yoshimi is not taught table manners and is told to listen to only limited genres of music. Hearing that Yoshimi is good at baseball, Noboru, one of Machiko’s step children, asks her to a baseball game. The girl declines, saying she has a piano lesson. On the day of the game, Yoshimi goes missing.
