Kenjiro coughs up blood and is transported to the hospital. Machiko learns from the doctor that he has lung cancer and has only six months to a year to live. Machiko tells Kenjiro the truth and they both try to take it in stride. Kenjiro is allowed to go home for his birthday where the children all gather at their house and celebrate.
