Machiko breaks by accident an arm of a statue of multi-armed deity at a neighboring temple. Keeping it secret, Machiko asks the Buddhist priest and neighbor to let her have the statue for a while. In Machiko’s room, Kenjiro and others "break" the arm one after another, not knowing it has already been broken. Meanwhile, Machiko’s mother quits working. Asked why, she says she wants to live doing what she wants to do, and tells Machiko that she is going on a journey abroad alone.
